Piston Rings or Valve Seals
My motor is burning oil. There is no visable burnage at idle but 5k+ rmps the light blue smoke comes pouring out. Is there any way to tell if this is the piston rings or valve seals without tearing the motor apart? The block is already bored .20 over if I hone it again and put new rings in wont my piston to wall clearence be too large?
compression or leakdown test... cant remember which, but I do know that
testing dry vs wet will indicate the root cause.
wet being some oil put on top of the piston to seal the rings better for the test.
this can all be done with the head on the block.
leak when dry but no leak when wet = bad rings
leak when dry and leak when wet = bad valveseals
could be other stuff but this is the usual scenaario.
good luck bro.

leakdown wont tell u if the seals or guides are bad because the valves are supposed to be closed when u test.but it will tell u if the rings or valve job is bad, leak from the breather is rings, exhast or im leak is bad valve job.
