Default i can hear my RPMs through aux input.

i have a sony portable xm radio. standard cigarette lighter adapter. was once hooked up through an fm modulator, and made the noise, but was tolerable. now i have a new stereo with straight aux input and now the noise is louder.

last night i cut cigarette lighter adapter and hard wired it to the battery in my trunk. and grounded it in the most isolated spot i could find on the passenger side near the back seat.

the noise is still there, and when i go home im just gonna split my audio cable at the speakers and completely bypass the radio. i hope this helps. but if anyone know how to fix this problem, i would appreciate you telling me. and no it doesn't do it in other vehicles.

What kind of radio did you get? Brand?
Seems like your new radio does not have a good engine noise isolation circuit.
Normally, those front AUX jack imputs dont have good noise isolation due to its high impedance.

In this case, the quality of the radio is very important.

It doesn't matter where you hook up your portable's power.

Does the noise get higher pitched as you rev the engine?
Is the Aux input a mini jack (headphone jack) or an RCA jack?
If the noise does go up with the engine and if the connector is as RCA jack, just go to a stereo shop and ask for a ground loop isolator. Probably like $25.
If its a mini jack, you'll need to go to like Radio Shack and buy a mini jack to RCA convertor and then a RCA to mini jack converter, so that you can put the ground loop isolator in-line. (you may need to do some soldering for the convertors.)

If the noise doesn't go up with the volume, and this doesn't happen in other vehicles with the same Sony unit, then your radio is probably defective. Changing power sources for the Sony won't make a difference. You can try to ground the shield on the RCA's too.
