Default My shifter is touching the exhaust pipe...

My shift **** become very hot and I have some trouble shifing in the wet weather when the shifter is hot so I looked underneath and foudn that the joint part of the shifter is rubbing against the exhaust pipe...
I have a DC short shifter and Apexi N1 exhaust.. both installed by a reputable shop.
I could feel the dimple on top of the exhaust pipe from the shifter rubbing against it... Either the shifter is installed too low or or the exhaust is mounted to high??
Everything looks normal, I checked the bolts.. and the exhaust mounts.. I believe they used the stock rubber mounts.
Anybody else have this problem?

wow i thought i was the only one with this problem...its so weird cuz it only happens when it rains hard out. and i feel my shifter knocking around sometimes it gets stuck in nuetral like its very hard to move around but it goes away after a couple of seconds...the weirdest thing.

edit: i dont think its banging against the exhaust pipe though. it could be a problem with a tranny seal or something cuz liek i said its ONLY when it rains hard out so that means that the water is affecting it some how.

My skunk2 short shifter hits my Tanabe Hyper Medallion exhaust when I push the shifter all the way to one side. If I play with the shifter in neutral you can feel and hear it touch the exhaust a little bit, but it never really gets hot (just warm) and it doesn't prevent me from shifting at all.

WOW after all this time searching I find someone with the same problem!!! I have trouble in heavy rain, puddles, and snow... It feels like my clutch is going out, it shakes, rattles, i feel something mettalic like a flywheel rubbing against my shifter. On normal conditions it is fine... So you think its a tranny seal?? I hope together we can find out what the problem is...

I have a skunk2 SS and Apex N1. Nothing hits, not even close. But my shifter gets hot, I think the material transfers more heat.

did you ever remove the heatshields?

After i removed the shields on a teg, the shifter became hot, particularly in the summer.

I also have the dc and decided to keep the heat shield on...it definately rubs, but over time is has worn a spot. I though of just banging down the spot near the bottom of the shifter, but decided not to see what would happen. As for the heat I think that no matter what any SS will get hot due to the closer proximity to the exhaust. HTH

yup removing the heatshields makes the shifter and consol hotter. i did it. good idea in the winter. doesn't bother me in the summer tho. if your shifter is hitting your exhaust then you should bend the mounts so the pipe is moved away from the shifter.

I fixed this by taking off the piping for my RSR exhaust and bahsing it in a little bit. Either put the stock shifter back in, bash the exhaust or try to bend the hangers for the exhaust so it sits a little lower.

Yeah, mines got the polsihed muffler and piping on the muffler section. But thats the one, its not a straight through so its quiet, even with a test-pipe.

Easy Fix:

Take off rear shifter bushing (located: behind and under the shifter), remove the two metal spacers that the two bolts go through, replace the bushing tighten the bolts so that the bushing contracts moving the shifter up and away from the b-pipe, tourque both bolts evenly. Done. Ive done 3 inlcuding my own. No problems to date..

Yeah if its red then it is an aftermarket bushing, probably ES. It will still work. Good Luck!!

Hey sorry about the old thread, I am currently having the same issue, I have a k tune short shifter and it hits my skunk2 exhaust, is it possible I have the bitch pin side of the shift linkage backwards? Or does it not matter which way to goes? Any help would be great, thanks!
