well.......i pulled off the stupidest stunt ever yesterday at the track. after a full day of work, and 5hrs of driving to the hotel, i slept for about 4 hours before getting up to get to tech and registration before the event. in 100 degree heat at 9am people do stupid things. and i did the stupidest of them all.
look at this picture and see if you can tell me what is wrong. i'll post the answer later.

yup......believe it or not, i put my pad in backwards and ran about 8 laps like that. the first practice session i thought my brakes weren't really stopping the car, and they were fading far more than i remembered. the second practice session they started making a grinding sound so i knew something was wrong. in the end, the backing plate was melted down, the rotor is glazed to all hell, the fluid boiled, and my brakes felt like a marshmallow and didn't stop worth crap all day (big surprise). nonetheless, a bad day at the track is better than a good day at work.

yes......yes i did. you get 3 practice sessions of 4 laps a piece in the AM, then timed runs in the afternoon. i figured out what was wrong and fixed it inbetween my 2nd and 3rd practice run. NOTE: even mechanics gloves won't protect you 100% from insanely hot brakes. but i got it "fixed" and ran the rest of the day, albeit with limited braking power.
in the end it doesn't matter. i'm not out there to win money, or even a championship, i'm there to have fun, and i can't remember a weekend i had more fun since the last time i was at the track

Classic. I've seen that more often than one would think. We had a student (at an SCCA Comp school) do that once. He complained the car was pulling left under braking. When we figured it out, we couldn't stop laughing.

I remember one event I put my front tires on the back and of course then the backs went on the front. The car kinda looked funny, but duh I didn't notice. Then one of my competitors asked why I was running wider tires on the Back of a FWD car...

Last time i saw brake pads like that was when a friend of mine actually went through the brake pad material... but your way works too...
Glad you and the car made it through.

nope.......perfectly sober, wasn't even drinking the night before. just worn out after a long drive and not much sleep. i was just trying to do it really fast inbetween the drivers meeting and my first practice session (about 30 minutes) and wasn't paying attention. i don't think the intense heat at 9am was helping anything either.
i didn't think you could actually do that to be honest............and then i went and did it.
i'll have to turn the rotor at minimum to restore it to full operating condition. the pad, as far as i can tell, is fine (just has a half melted backing plate
).

We had the braking material come unglued from the backing plate once, and before we could check and fix it (car was still stopping OK), the backing plate had welded itself to the piston, and the piston worked its way through the backing plate, and was acting directly on the rotor.
oh my gosh, It took me till the end of the post to figure out what realy happen. You mean he put the back of the pad toward the rotor. I have probably done some dumb things in my life, but I don't think even if I was sleeping I could have made that mistake.
