Default Tranny problems or Toasted Clutch?

I've got a 94 GSR that I bought a month or two ago w/214000 miles. It has ran like a charm up until now...... The previous owner was an older man who said he had never replaced the clutch... To my surprise the clutch grabbed pretty decently for supposedly being the original one with all those miles.

Today during a very long (traffic filled) drive, I noticed it began to get harder to get the car in gear. This slowly got worst and worst, also when taking off from a complete stop in 1st and sometimes 2nd the clutch/tranny would chatter really hard. Once you got the car in gear it ran fine, until you had to slow down or stop. Now by just hearing the symptoms over the phone my buddy (master honda tech) believes it to be the clutch.......... but when I've seen clutches go out it's usually the slippage symptoms and not this....... anybody got a theory or experience as to what it might be?

The previous ownder did say he had to replace the slave cylinder, but I'm not too confident on that. (he wasn't too bright of a guy). Would your car chatter hard when taking off when your slave cylinder went out? Is there a way to test this thing? My buddy was telling me there are normally grooves on the disk material to help relieve the suctions from the flywheel, he was saying that when a clutch disc is worn down so far it would be like the clutch not disengaging. Can anyone else second that?

i had that problem, it was a spring from the disc that busted out and was stuck in there..it wasnt cool because i had only had the car for like a month and i already had to do major work to it. but all in all it was a great leaning process and an excuse to buy a dope *** clutch.
good luck man sorry to hear about it

Thanks for the info, I would much rather hear that it's the clutch and not the tranny.

I had the same problem. I bought a 94 LS with 206,000 miles one the orginal clutch. I pulled the transmission today, ( had the same problems you described) only too find a spring on the disk fell out.

What clutch did you go with? And did that spring popping off give you any problems? Did you get a good deal on a clutch?

Well I finally pulled the tranny and clutch and low and behold the pressure plate failed and two little pieces were floating around in the clutch assembly. Surprisingly the clutch disc still had some meat on it, with 215k miles I was amazed. I just picked up my flywheel and PP from the machine shop to get resurfaced and balanced to the PP.
