Reusing Head Gasket and Head Bolts
I know this is wrong to do, but I purchased a head with these extras and the head gasket looks new, so do the head bolts. Anyone here ever do this? Any problems?
I really wouldn't re-use the gasket, but I've always used the bolts over, and never had any prblems. A head gasket is no more than $30 at your local auto store. My last one was $27 from CarQuest, but this is the closest store in 20 miles, so naturally its a bit more expensive.
If you don't know the age/condition, replace them both. You don't want to run into problems later b/c of something that could have easily been taken care of at the time of installation.
Depends on which motor you are talking about. the SOHC motors had a service bulliten put out a few years ago. New bolts are sold from Honda. The basic rule is if you have the new bolts with the twisted shank reuse them. If you have the old bolts with the smooth shank replace them.
Always replace the headgasket unless you're doing some sort of junkyard...... nevermind just replace it. A new Y7 or Y8 headgasket is less than $20 from Honda.
