consuming oil bigtime on a rebuilt b16a2
I recently had my engine rebuilt. I had the rings done, the rod bearings done and the head completely redone, springs, retainers, valves, guides, seats. Every now and then my car puffs blue smoke. Yes I know the boxed answer...rings. I am being told that my cat can be causing this problem also because it is melted and creating so much backpressure that the oil is being pushed into the combustion chamber. I am going through approx 4 quarts of oil a week in a car that consumed about 1 quart every 5000 miles originally. Should I be laying into my friend and expecting him to redo my rings? Could this all be caused by the melted cat? I would really like to know what is up here. I did a compression check and it went 1-4 195 200 200 215. So do a leakdown next? I really need to get this thing running well before clases start up because i won't have much time to work on it or have it be in the shop for days. Thanx guys.

It could be a number of variables....alot of times, it can be the valve seals. You didn't mention if the valve seals were replaced. The seals generally comes with the upper gasket kit.
