Texas Honda Challenge...it's for real
It's official, we had the first running on 8/3 with four cars in attendance: civic, integra & two CRX's. I need everyone in the Texas area to join NASA and begin stripping out their Hondas and preparing them to do battle. Due to scheduling problems NASATX does not have any more events this year. However, next year there will be 7 events: 3@TWS (www.texasworldspeedway.com), 3@MSR (www.motorsportranch.com) & 1@Hallet (www.hallettracing.com).
During the recruiting process we have run into the forced induction problem. I do not want keep someone from the track because they have gone to the dark side. I know the rules & many of you are against FI in Honda Challenge. But, is there a way we can accommodate this with weight penalties in H1 or a new H0 (unlimited) class? I almost feel that if he can keep the engine together for 30 racing minutes he deserves to win...thoughts?
Lastly, unfortunately in the last race one of the CRX's got sideways in a very high-speed turn with me right behind and nowhere to go. I now need a new front bumper (steel beam), radiator & hood for my '00 integra. Does anyone in the Houston area have these parts for sale?

So you only had four cars, and two of the four ended up with damage from car to car contact? Eeek! Now you want to add turbos to the mix? LOL!

Yeah, rough day.
I do not necessarily want to add them to the mix. I just don't want a turbo to stand between having another driver on track...
Flux & RAB: Begin gutting. Let's turn this into a great series. You will not regret it.

Mobie,
IMO- TRY to stick to the current rules. Why try and re-write them for 'one' guy? If he wants to play he'll be there legally. You'll have better luck building numbers with a stable, proven platform.
If and only IF you want to make an exception for FI, stick him in a H0 or HU class. Somesort of 'regional' Honda catch-all class.
Good Luck!!
If you get this off the ground........ we'll help as much as possible.

Why is it that HC is seen as the "race what you brung" series? People buy ex-WCHC cars knowing full and well there is no place to race them, yet want to chance HC rules to allow them. People build FI cars knowing there is no place to race them, but sure HC rules should be changed, classes added to allow them.
Why is that? I don't get it.

Because initially, Honda Challenge was seen as a ruleset that was flexible and willing ot listen to someone's case if they wanted a change. That's now biting us in the butt.
Just a guess.

Simmer down nah'
I posted this to get a bit of direction. John makes a good point and I agree. Let's forget about FI.
Thanks for the support John.

I'm so there. WTF, how did I not hear about HC @ Hallett? How new is this schedule? I thought Hallett was not aviliated with NASA since 2001. Good to hear about this!
Count me in for Hallett and at least a couple of the TX races.

any HC racers care to give an average how much it will cost to make HC spec car and the amount money spent per event to enter/race?

1st off - buy a car, don't build one. And no, I didn't heed my own advice, and I don't necessarily regret it, but there are a lot of pros to buying.
I'll have spent $10K minimum (realistically $12K prolly) by the time I am done making my ITA Civic Si competitive. Right now I have about $8K in it and I do well in my local series but would get rolled by any other ITA cars running in Honda Challenge.
Now compare that to CRX's I see on improvedtouring.com that have new engines and trick trannys with all the race goodies for $6K-8K. Makes you think. For anything bigger/better/faster then a hatchcrapper... well, you can imagine.
Race weekends typically $200-300 just for entry in a 1-day SCCA event. Can't speak for NASA. Figure in towing, gas, food, hotel, and all the unknowns and it's possible to spend $800-900 or more for a single weekend. More if you've got last-minute car-parts you have to purchase.
Ben, who is right now being persuaded by a fellow racer via IM to *not* use the credit card to buy some parts. Damnit this sport sucks (the wallet that is)

what exactly do you mean by buy a car and not build one? are you saying buy one already pre-made to spec? im not even considering going h1 on this since i have read stories how some people had to sell thier Z or thier s4 just to keep racing.
Exactly. Hmm, who was it, was selling 2-3 cars in here just a couple weeks ago. An ITR, GSR, and something else perhaps? I know chrisb is selling his GSR too. Several people have been trying to sell race-ready cars. And of course there are always some ITC,B,A cars for sale in the classifieds section of improvedtouring.com too.
Mobie69: so how long until a website with more info is up? Is the name "Texas Honda Challenge" set in stone? just curious

You will spend 2-3x as much building a car as you will buying it already built. There's the labor involved also, and building a racecar requires replacement of a lot of components you probably didnt think of.
Figure - buy a car (cheap, h4-h5?) for $5000-$6000. Probably needs some prep, and new tires. Add $1000. You're going to need to tow it. Add truck/trailer. You're going to need safety gear (helmet, suit, etc). Add another $1500. Now add $800-$1000 per weekend you're going to race. Entry fee, hotel, tire/brake wear, wear on other parts, fuel....

I 100% agree with these guys, buy one that is ready to race.
I bought a new Si to strip and race.. drove it for 50K miles and now she is a track *****... I cannot tell you have stupid i am... if i did it again i would have a h2 ready to race.. Get it race ready and get on the track.. There is so much to learn in order to go fast that a changing car just adds to the difficulty..
my next one will already be built for sure!

uncleben - The schedule is so new that NASATX has not posted it yet. It was announced at the 8/3 race. I can't wait to run at Hallet, it looks like a nice track.

Some would say the track is a bit dated - and in fact it is the oldest in the midwest region. The track surface itself leaves a little to be desired but is not bad. It's just such a fun course with dramatic elevation change and some pretty tricky sections. The facilities at Hallett have been greatly improved too - an air-conditioned tower and cafe, where you can watch the lap times on the TV screens now that they have an AMB timing system in place. Covered paddocks that you can rent, and several good stands to watch the races from.
My only gripe about Hallett is they don't have a tunnel or bridge to get inside the track where everything is located. So you have to of course wait to drive in between races. I've only been to 2 other tracks though - Heartland Park Topeka and Beaverun, so I don't have much to compare to.
they have in-car video from both CW and CCW laps here:
