Default Power Steering Fluid!?

hey all. i just got a question that i'm unsure of.
I know all honda power steering system has to use honda power steering fluid.
but after I got my car from my mechanic to recondition the steering rack, he put in normal (red) power steering fluid. He told me it doesn't matter which one to put in.
even if i top up with honda power steering fluid later.... he is correct or...?

The only thing I ever use is Honda ps fluid if the system is healthy and GM cold weather ps fluid (synthetic) if the system is noisey in cold weather (moans, whines). Auto parts stores sell the equivalent for about the same price as normal ps fluid. So why not use the stuff the factory reccomends?

Ask you mechanic what ps fluid he uses in late model VW's. If he sais it doesn't matter, find a new tech...

I don't know. honda says other brand of power steering fluid will damage the system. use only genuine honda power steering fluid.

Red power steering fluid? That sounds like ATF, which is commonly used in domestics as PS fluid. I would flush it IMMEDIATELY!!!

There are three types of P.S. fluids: Universal, Dextron ATF and hydrolic mineral based (used in older Mercedes Benz). You are suppose to have Honda ps fluid or unversal; which is a clear color. If I was You, I would go to a shop and have them flush it for like 30-40 bucks. You, and a buddy, could do it yourself. Let one person siphon out old fluid and simultaneously pouring in universal ps fluid. The other person behind the wheel locking it from left to right, this will activate the ps pump and you sould be able to flush the whole system. Make sure you buy several bottles of ps fluid. Should cost you $5.00.

I worked at a Honda dealership for 6 months and NEVER saw PS fluid in any color other than clear/yellow. Not on new cars, not on used cars.
