Default 91 Si - front-end vibration when accelerating

Hi guys,

Under hard acceleration (particularly above 4k and at high speed) I am getting a lot of front-end vibration. I can feel it in the steering wheel.

When I let off the accelerator, even at high speed, the vibration goes away instantly.

Yesterday I took a hard right and I think I heard a clunk from the front end. It wasn't real loud, but it could be related.

I had the cv-joints replaced about a year ago. The problem has been getting worse over the last couple months, but I don't drive the car much.

Ideas?

Have you checked the bearings? Just a guess, anyone else have any ideas?

Could be a motor mount. Could be axle going bad. Could be wheel bearing. Could be a bushing. Could be a lot of things. Jack the car up and find out. I think it's a motor mount, but I wouldn't know since I never looked at the car.

Are the shocks original or have they ever been replaced?
A dead shock will give you a "jack-hammering" effect on the right hand side
under hard acceleration..

Your wheels could simply just need to be balanced?

The wheels may well be out of balance, but would that cause the problem to only occur under acceleration?

I know there are lots of potential causes, but I'm hoping the symptoms will help me narrow it down.

The shocks might have been replaced by the previous owner, but that was over 2 years ago. It passes the "bounce test", however.

I just need some diagnostic tips.

warped rotors

my brakes are 100%. no issues there. Only when accelerating, particular under hard acceleration at high speed (approaching 80 in 4th).

Trust me on this, just go get your wheels balanced and it should solve your problem. I had the same problem with some cheap-o steelies I was driving around on and I had them balanced and it was all good to go.

All right - I'll try that first and report the results.

Just an update - last night I was driving and the vibration went away. One stoplight I had it. The next one it was gone.

weird.

I'm probably going to discount the wheels, unless they have somehow learned to balance themselves ...

Jack the car up and shake the wheels. Try and move them up and down, front to back and in and out(not in the direction the wheel would turn, grab the top and the bottom and try and move it.) If theres excessive play it could be wheel bearing or suspension.

I doubt that, these cars are old. I had to replace every bushing/balljoint/rotor to solve my shaking.
