Final Drive and Slick Size Recommendation
You want to stay on a 22 inch slick for a 4.4 final drive.. going to a 4.7 on a 22 inch slick wont get you any faster.. you need a taller slick such as a 24.5 but in order to run that successfully. you need a solid 206+whp but more importantly high rpm to utilize that taller tire.. and 139+tq wouldnt hurt either.. the only reason anyone would want a 4.7 final drive is to end the traps at a much higher rpm in 4th gear.. about 9500rpm to be exact. if your motor cant hang then i dont suggest trying that.. I have a car i built running in the 12.1's with a 4.4 and 22x8x13 inch slicks.. thats a perfect combo for 195-204ish whp.. cant beat it.. if your car doesnt need a bigger slick then its not for you.. keep it simple guys.. dont get too ahead of yourselves.. you might get stuck back pedaling, wondering why your car is not going faster and maybe lower mph too.. just my 2 cents..
As far as 230whp goes I would go with a 4.7 and 24.5x8x13 M/T...

afaik, it all just depends upon how fast your car is. you want to be tickeling the rev limiter in 5th gear or your prefered gear as you pass the 1320 mark
once you know what kinda mph's you can hit, then u just calculate what final drive and tire size combonation u should go with

good info, can you provide some formulas to calculate rpm/speed at a given gear(4th) in order to determine what rpm will the car finish the 1320 according to the tyre size and gear ratios!

230whp that's it? Just get some drag radials like azenis, NT555's or something.
Why even worry about final drive? I doubt you even touch 5th gear.

lucky is right on. my RPM with my 4.78 and 22s was around 9300 on the stock GSR tach (meaning not totally accurate) yesterday. on the stock 4.4 it was around 8700 give or take a bit.
Honestly with the lack of info i couldn't give you a good combo i don't know how anyone could like weight of vehicle what are the 1 2 3 4 5 gears ratios also what rpm you are making this hp in this is all relevant ... so i didn't vote for a combo!

figure if your final is 4.9 ATS, your power is between 6500 to 9000 then stick with a 24.5" slick if you at least make 140 in torque thats enough to push the *big* slick ... Don;t get caught up in the overall final drive ratio, using a 22" slick vs a 24.5" slick, your main focus is not to spin the tires down the 1/4 mile after launch.
Thats my opinion for you to go faster on e/t.

If you dont got the power to push the slick its pointless

Yep, he's right. Again, depanding on what cams you are using , what RPM shift and OD wheel combo, a 4.7 won't do crap. Maybe in the auto-x world or road corse.

What about the dyno graph. Certain ET times are by where your HP/TQ meets and where it stay at constent, not peak as alot of people tend to see.
Damn, I also realise this is an old post, lol

1 2 nv I have a problem with your et and weight versus my et and weight.
I have very similar power to your motor, except that I have 147 tq.My car weights 2350 with me in it and it runs the quarter in 12.87@109.A weight difference of aprox.500lbs
but the same mph and very similar hp and torque.
Also the 4.78 final drive trany(98 and up type r jap spec),I was told that 1st 2nd and 3rd,were geared differently, but 4th and 5th gears were adjusted so the motor would turn at the same rpm in 5th gear.
Are parts available to repair those tranys (selectors and gears and brass)
Any help would be gratefull?
thanx-Rob

not exactly sure what u are askin rob but my ET last yr (02')was 12.6@107 with same setup as this yr (03') except last yr i weighed in at 2200lbs or so w/ me in the car.
now for the parts question. if i remember my specs correctly civic SI or SIR in canada tranny parts should be the same as the 98+ spec jap tranny. that goes for gears, selectors and brass. id ask a tranny question if i were u in a seperate thread just to double check. anymore question id b happy to help if i can.
