I've always had a problem with this weird loud screaching noise at around 4500 rpms to redline. But I finally got a video of it. It's impossible to see in the vid but the screaching starts at around 3 or 4 psi and goes until 8 psi which is the max boost.

It's a little hard to hear it, but it's deffinately there. And what it sounds like in the video is about half as loud as it really is.

If you're wondering about my setup, here's some basics:
dropshop mani
14b turbo w/ stock wastegate @ 8 psi
2" charge pipes w/ dsm sidemount ic.
filetofit map limiter w/ 450cc injectors and resistor box
2" flared downpipe to 2 1/2" straigh through exhaust

OMG... thats not a screech, thats a knock... check your turbo, make sure the shaft isn't bouncing around... it almost sounds like a rod knock, but not exactly...

 

anyone else have an idea what the noise might be?

 

belts? take some wd40 and spray the accessory belts and see if it stops.

unhook your charge pipe and run it. still making noise?
run some 110 fuel.

just a few Ideas

 

try the 110 fuel but don't unhook the charge pipe, you can over rev the turbo and shorten it's life if not destroy it.

 

detonation definitely . . . and the scary type (high rpm) . . . are you running lean?

 

That could be detonation? I'm just wondering because I've got the 450cc injectors running at -35%. Which I thought was running pretty rich compared to others that have their settings at -40%. Can someone give me suggestions to find out what the problem could be.

whats your timing set at, and what kind of plugs are you running?

 

My timing is stock and I've got the ngk bkr7e spark plugs.

Oh and another thing to add, from what I've noticed, the noise I hear is usually only in first, second, and third gear, fourth and fifth gears don't make it.

 

No I haven't had it tuned, there is no tuning place on my island. So I think I will try removing the charge pipe and take one run with it like that and see if it helps. If it doesn't help, anyone else have any suggestions?

 

oh yea...that sounds like detination! Not a fun sound to hear. Ive be careful about revin' that high until you get that whole fuel thing figured out.

Oh ****, sounds like the verdict is pretty much in. Detonation. I'm willing to bet that my motor is fucked. I haven't noticed any differences in how the car runs though. That's really weird though because I'm getting a lot of backfire, which is from running rich and my plugs are also on the darker side. Well I guess I'll do a compression test and see what that does. I did one a while ago and it was pretty much 185 across the board. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I guess I'll post that video up for people that are wondering what detonation sounds like. Because I got the impression that it was beebee in a can....but my car sounds nothing like that. Hopefully everyone can at least learn from my mistake. Thanks for all your help.

 

Let me ask you something, when it start to make that noise, do you feel like vibration of some kind on your gas pedal? because my friends LS/Vtec with high comp. is doing the same thing and it was knocking causing the check engine light to go off and makes a code 23, knock sensor. I retarded more timing and put some colder plugs and went away. His car is NA by the way with like 12+ comp.

get a air/fuel ratio meter and make sure its not leaning out. You said the plugs are BLACK. ??? hmm your timming is a stock ,its defenitely the motor. since its making nosies only when you accelarate. That sounds very bad. too back your not local. Is it just me or alot of people having problems with VAFC hack??your check engine light is on whats the code.????thats should have been the first thing you check.

Most likely the knock sensor code "23"

-No, I don't feel any vibration on the gas pedal.

-The cel that i've got is code 3, if I remember correctly. And that's a common one with the hack.

Because I've been running with this problem for a while now, about 6 months....what might be some things that I should double check to see if it's it's broken or fixable or what? Truthfully, i haven't noticed anything different about it while driving. Well except that the idle's kinda funky, but that's been a problem from day one with the 450cc injectors and before boosting.

 

the hack adds a LOT of timing.. if you havent retarded your timng you are DEFINITELY getting detonation. Ive preached this before.
