silly question about wheel offsets..
the higher the offset the more the edge of the wheel stickes in and the smaller the number the offset the more it sticks out right??
im getting ready to get some new 16's but i love the way my volks look and the tire looks perfect with the wheel well .. granted they are 7.5 with a 40 offset but when i get the 16's they only come 7" wide so i wanted to compensate with the offset .. am i making any sence??

yes you need to change the offset when you go with wider wheels than stock. you should be able to figure out what offset you need with a 7" wide tire. i don't know what the stock offset is on the 4th gens, but if its similiar to the 3rd gen teg, that is 45mm offset for a 6" wide tire.
