ZC tranny ID'ing. How to tell?
ok, I pressured-washed the 88 Si drive train last night that's going into my 90 CRX DX this weekend. After removing all the grime, I found "ZC" written in yellow grease marker 3 different places on the tranny, and "ZC SOHC" scribbled on the bell housing. Looks like inventory markings from a shop/importer.
I don't know much of the history of the drivetrain, just that it came from an 88 Si parts car that I acquired. As far as I knew, the car had a stock Si drivetrain. Anyway, since I wanted to replace the syrchros with the un-worn DX ones, I cracked open the case to assess condition. I counted the teeth on the final drive, and it has the same number as the DX (69 teeth) with the 3.88 FD. Now I know that ZCs had a 3.88 FD, same as a DX, but a lower 1-5th gearing. The Si trannys have a 4.2something FD(more teeth?).
SO, does this mean it's a true ZC tranny? Sticker says it's an L3, same as my old ZC sedan's tranny.

just because it says L3 on the tranny doesnt mean anything, because all d-series trannies have that stamp on them, so its very much possible that you have a zc tranny

True, my 89 sedan had a ZC tranny with "L3" marking, but so did the busted stock USDM DX tranny that came out of the CRX. So I guess the only way to tell is crack it open and see what's inside?

so they won't work with stock USDM d-series axles? I thought the intermediate shaft was just there to reduce torque steer and increase performance, and that the outside casing of the tranny was identical to all cable D-series.
