Default B16 or GSR motor?

Hey! I'm new to this forum, so sorry if this question has been asked already!
I have a 92 civic hatch and I can't figure out which motor to get. This is my daily driver and I'm looking to only street/track race. No auto-x stuff. For now I don't plan on doing a turbo or nos. I want something real quick with not a lot of hassles!! (If that's not asking too much!) And I'm not trying to spend more than 3500.
I recently drove a 4 door with a B16 and loved it, but I want more!! So I thought about maybe getting a gsr motor. Some friends say get the b16 and then some say get the gsr, but i dont know!! lol
When it come to motors and their capabilities...I'm clueless! Any facts/links & opinions would be great! Thanks in advance

I think you already answered you own questions. You said you loved the B16 but wanted somthing more. GSR would be what I call a next step logicall upgrade and a bump up in overall HP and TQ. you'll mainly fee the differance if the .2 liter of displacement. Daily driven.... more torque is more enjoyable to drive around in.

the gsr will give u a lil more power over the b16 but u will pay an arm and a leg for it so my suggestion to u is get the b16 if u really need a dohc and up grade it ... maybe a lil head work chip the ecu a nice set of cams and u willl be happy or u can go the other way which is stick to a single cam vtec engine and drop some cash into it and be able to smoke b16's and gsr's all day long"3500 will go a long way in a single cam but it will only give u a bone stock gsr/b16 and what if u blow a b16 or gsr price and availabilty or not that great on those 2 but d16z6 are still dime a dozen ...

haha now your starting to sound like Wil of exospeed. LOL

yeah droping 3500 into a sohc vtec OR non-vtec will seriousely do some damage to ALL mildly buit B16 and basic GSR out there bro. But the d16 only can go so far with it's HP limits. If you want to keep on being able to mod it now and add another mod to it once every month the D16 comes out short. But hey it's still a fun *** motor to drive tough. Personally if your only going to get a STOCK B16 and keep it internally stock I would tell you to dump the money into a D16..... same TQ and just work on the HP a little.

i do want a dohc. and i do plan on modding. but i just dont know which one will have more potential and power after modding it? does one motor have more potential over the other with all the modifications w/out going turbo or nos? so from what everyone is saying is i could get a b16 for less than a gsr and with the difference in price i could mod the hell out of it and it still be faster than a gsr!?

why not get an LS motor? its cheaper than both of them and the power isnt no worse than a B16, plus later you could build a LS/VTEC. we put a LS swap in my buddies hatch(92 cx) with the basic boltons(i/h/e) and he ran consistant 14.7's. thats better than any of the B16's in this area with the same mods.

There is many threads on this and i'm sure most will agree B16 is a good motor and tranny and a great base to start out with and the B18c is a little better with more TQ and HP but at a higher cost. Both you can't go wrong with but if you can afford it GSR

go with the GSR, "theres no replacement for displacement, except money, and lots of it" hehe picked up that quote somewhere on the board, 4got where, everyone has a b16 in a hatch it seems, be somewhat different and get the 1.8 even tho alot of people do have the b18s swapped too

ok in that case got with the B18c1!
with the same mods and money and time invested into the two different motors the B18c1 will make a WHOLE lot more hp and tq

if u liked the b16 in a 4 door, you will like it alot more in your 92 hatch. b16s are lots of fun and can be fast...

i think it depends on how hardcore you are into the scene. i fu wanna be the fastest street racer on the road and want a hella fast motor, the a 1.6 isnt the way to go.

if you got other things u wanna spend your money on as well, then a b16 will be just fine. still faster than alot of cars on the road.

a penny saved is a penny earned

I've had a B16 and now a CRVT- I won't ever go back to the lower displacement motors... Don't get me wrong, I love to rev to 10k, but there is no way to explain the actual difference between the 1.6 and 1.8/2l motors. They have at least 30ftlb mor tq. and you will love every second of it. Go GSR for daily with some ITR cams and you should be happy.

Get the GSR. If you were gonna get a b16 and mod it to be as quick as a gsr it still wont have the reliability. And if you wanna go further it gets harder to squeeze hp out of a b16. Like everyone says theres no replacement for displacement. It ll leave you open to choices, you can leave the gsr stock and have a fast *** car. Or if you feel like moding it then youll have a super fast car!

i love my b18c1 hatch. i dont have to wind the **** out of it to make power like you'll have to with a b16.

a b16 hatch will feel almost identical to a d16 hatch if you keep it below 6K. they have roughly the same torque but the b16 makes more torque at a higher rpm.

remember, you FEEL torque and the b16 has almost none below 5k wheras a b18c1 has SOME.

I had both B16a and GSR. I noticed a big difference with the GSR motor. When comparing them stock you can hear vtec and rev the **** out of a B16a. But with GSR you can feel the car actually move But you can make B16a fast with boost , nitrous, and motor work. I hit a 13.2 @104 B16aEF 75 shot with slicks and that's with a 3rd gear miss shift. Either motor would be cool but it all comes down to your budget.

b16 motor, tranny, ECU - around $1,200
b18c1 motor, tranny, ECU - $3,500 for a non-abused one

If you want to pay $2,300 for 10 hp and a few extra ft/lbs, go for it!

on a budget... go b16
looking for potential big par... go gsr

ive had a b16 and a b18c in my hatch. Even though the b16 is more cost effecient the gsr is worth every penny. i felt the instant torque and a big difference going up steep hills. Id save a little bit longer just to get the gsr. Then again the gsr i put in my car had a type-r tranny and type-r pistons. This shouldnt make the dramatic difference though. GSR
