Best way to retard timing???
I got my crower 403's installed and the mechanic advanced my timing on my B18A. Even with 91 octane gas, my car is pinging big time. The mechanic who did the install told me to adjust my distributor cap and move it toward the firewall to retard the timing.
Another mechanic told me to adjust the cam sprockets (skunk2) to retard the timing. He said I would not be able to ever get my camshafts at TDC if I moved the distributor cap.
I was wondering which way you think would be best to retard the timing?
thanks

you gotta loosen the 3 bolts holding the distributor assembly to the head and turn the distributor towards the front of the car to retard timing. BUT you MUST have a timing gun to accuratly set the timing correctly or you will never know if it's to hight or to low. some dentonaton you cant hear.
also once you adjust the intake cam timing with the adjustibe cam gears you have to re-adjust the ignition timing as well since the intake camshaft turns the rotor in the distributor.
take it back to who ever installed your cams and have them adjust the timing back to spec.

There's an article with pics on how to do the job.
Also, ignition (distributor) timing and Cam timing are 2 TOTALLY different things. To get rid of your pinging you need to adjust the IGNITION timing.
Cam timing is purely performance/power related. (read: move the power band, etc.)

Thanks for the info. I checked out the site, and still have another question.
When retarding the timing, does it have to be in 1 degree increments? Let's say my timing is at 18, would I have to go exactly to 17?
thanks again
