98 ITR or 02 A4?
the 98 R has 37k miles ($16,500) as mentioned in my other post, the 2002 A4 has 30k miles its a 1.8t quattro clean as hell silver/black, sport, xenons everything, the guy has a S4 coming in like 5weeks and really needs to sell, has it listed for 25,900 and i told him i would only pay $20,800 and he said he would do it! Now im stuck because both are great deals....what you think?
$20.8k for the A4 is not a particularly good deal (just slightly under private party blue book). Also, in four years the A4 will be worth $11k or so (1998 A4s are going in that range). At present glacial depreciation rates, the R will also be worth about $11k then (if not more). You do the math.
However, if you have to think for more than a second when deciding between an R and an A4, it sounds like the A4 would be a better car for you.

The A4 is a much "nicer" car for daily driving. Audi Interiors =
Although it wont be as entertaining as an ITR. You're going to have to drive both cars and see what fits best for you.

it all depends....
wanna spend a lot time getting thongs repaired on a car in 2-3 yrs max? Get the audi...
Wanna enjoy a car thats fast, reliable and like no other on the market for the price? Get a ITR....
Actually, I would never even consider a A4 instead of a R

Most newer audis are pretty damn reliable. And most sold within the past 5 years included free scheduled maintenance for 3/36.

The A4's are nice but are completely underpowered pigs. You are comparing 2 totally different vehicles and it really depends on your priorities...I mean, with one you have a luxurious 4 door 5 seaters that the ladies dig, and the other a 2 door uncomfortable 4 seater that is a theft/stunna magnet, not to mention out of control insurance rates. Driving pleasure wise I say the R, it will put a smile on your face everytime.

S4, yes. A4, hell no, not even in the same ball park. Now if you want to compare the A4 apples to apples, go drive a TLX.
I would agree, if you are asking this question, the R is not for you.

They are? So I guess that all those A4's & A6's with fried coil packs that left many people stranded this year means that they are "reliable". Ever wonder if that has anything to do with Audi's being the fastest depreciating import luxury car sold in the US?
I used to work for an Audi dealership, so their is no way you can get me to buy that line. But maybe some uninformed folks will but it. A perfect example of Audis EPIC depreciation: 2002 S6 Avant MSRP $61,520-------------->fast forward to summer '03 Galves book trade in value for northeast dealers......A PATHETIC $39.6K!!!! Numbers dont lie, but people do!

I can see you don't own one. My S4 has had more issues than the last 4 cars combined and I have not even owned it for 2 years yet!!!! Sneeze wrong and the CEL light goes off. I actually can't remember all the parts that have been replaced without looking. And it is Stock!!!! I dare not chip it as I'm sure the turbos will go. As nice as the Audis are, I've bought my last for quite some time. Too bad as the performance is awesome.

i'm sure you have heard this before but if you had to even ask, you don't deserve a Type R.
Type R: True Sports Car, very reliable too
Audi: Good daily car, reliabilty is an issue

Dont get on here and tell me i dont deserve a typeR or if i have to ask i should go with the A4, i have owned 99 si (stolen), 00 Si, 00 S2k, 00 ITR, 01 ITR (both black), I just was considering going for something different and i thought the a4 was a really nice car for 20k, Ive always wanted a 98 ITR so im having a tough time deciding, and yes the audi comes with 4/50k mile free service...Im driving the audi tonight and that will help me decide
the audi for your info (norice) is $23,000 kbb.com private party with the options it has in good condition which the car is in excellent shape, trade in is $20,455, so both cars in my opinion are equally good deals...i have a feeling i will go with the type R but im going to drive the A4 and see what happens...

We have a 98 A4 1.8t and it has been very reliable.
Although the choices you've come up with are worlds apart

Do you take care of it? Let the car warm up before driving it hard? Let the turbos cool down before turning it off?
Most of the problems the S4 has is from negligent owners, because the S4 does need to be babied some

like said above
s4 yes a4 fu*******************k no. I would NEVER compare a ITR and a A$ with eachother, how can you????
ITR is perfectly fine for daily driving, i drive mine every day, far far far from stock, and love every min of it.
And for those of you that think Audi's dont break down......I would for AAA who does Audi road service, who only offers the road service to cars that are under warranty which means new cars only, if you guys want, i can print a report of all the Audi's that break down on any given day in So.Cal only...belive me you'll be shocked at how high the amount is.

Of course, that is the reason the turbos are still running strong. It has been mostly electrical issues and the "known to be faulty" washer pump.
