Default Just bought a 1990 Prelude Si.

Light blue, 5spd, A/C, no power windows or doorlocks though. On the bright side, everything works, the ligths pop up and down, sunroof works, A/C works but gets overwhelmed if I set it to outside air so I'll probably have to recharge it. It's got 167K miles and I paid $1500 for it. It runs great but the tires suck...compared to my Toyos FZ4. I'll probably have to get some rims and high performance tires when I get some cash. Other than that, everything is A OK

I had a 90 SI and the engine blew at 138K miles. And yes it was properly maintained and I changed the oil every 3K.

If it's the 2.0 SI with the b20A5 you're all set.

But the SI model with the 2.1 liter B21A1 has a horrible rod stroke ratio, good luck.

On the back it says 2.0Si. How do I find out which engine it has?

check next to the header piping on the block, they stamp the engine code on there.

I am pretty sure the B20 and B21 have identical rod/stroke ratios. The B21 just used the first generation of the composite cylinder sleeves and that along with really short rods caused a lot scoring of the cylinder walls and thus the lovely 3rd gen oil loss. Who cares? Check the oil and you will be fine.

The B21A1 is a stroked B20A5, it has the same bore of the cylinders but a longer stroke, hence a bad rod stroke ratio.

I didn't care at first about the oil burning but after a 130K the rings were so shot I lost all compression in cylinder #2.

But it doesn't matter because he's got the b20A5 motor.

If the following document is correct then they have the same stroke.
http://www.ntpog.org/articles/...b.xls
The B20A5 has a stroke of 95.0 and a bore of 81.
The B21A1 has a stroke of 95.0 and a bore of 83.

The extra displacement is gained by larger bore. I think they have identical cranks. What I don't understand is how the B20A5 has longer rods with a virtually identical engine. Maybe some engine guru can explain. You are right, looks like the B20A5 has a miniscule higher R/S ration. 1.503 vs. 1.492. Doubt that would make much difference though. Those crappy sleeves are what hurt the B21 the most.

Cool, you are right, I guess the extra wear is due to the sleeves.

Learn something new everyday.

If you look at the deck heights in that same spreadsheet, you'll notice that the deck height is different between the B20A5 and B21A1 by the same amount as the rod lengths are different. I believe this helps to contribute to the higher compression ratio of the B21A1.

You are right though, the differences are miniscule and the real problem of the B21A1 lies in premature wear on the first generation FRM sleeves.
