Good Deal?
Wasnt sure if this is the right place to post, but i figure its something im buying, so i should ask here.
Do you all think this is a good deal:
Full B16 JDM Swap with OBD2 GSR ECU (1991 motor) with 39k miles on it
With everything to put into a 97 civic (linkage, mounts, etc...)
For $2000 installed?

Is this a friend of yours? Do they give this deal to anyone? A JDM 90 motor has more than 40K miles.... I would think....
Sounds to me like there might be something wrong with the tranny or the motor. Will they give you a guarantee in writing? I mean, it is a good deal, but why so cheap? Have to ask yourself that question.
My friend to day just told me that the gs-r swap he got for $3500 installed (also a good deal) is messed up and it leaking water... warped block and head.........

Wait so its a 1st gen b16a with cable tranny? If it is, I would NEVER put a motor that old in my car. Save up a little more and go with a 99-00 Civic Si B16A2 swap or even a GSR swap. If money is not an issue, then go with an ARrR motor
To answer your question, $2000 installed is a descent price I guess.

The guy can guarentee on paper it will start and run fine for 30 days...gives the deal to anyone, but kinda a one deal shot.

IMHO, I wouldn't get that motor. Yes, it's a decent deal, but I think you might have problems in the long run.

If the motor is bad from japan (generally the case) from sitting too long then it's almost guaranteed that the problems will arise in 30 days...
Drive it OFTEN and HARD when you first get it back... otherwise it could blow down the road...
Just for your info...
My buddy recently got a jdm motor for a customer to avoid spending more money on a rebuilt head... they ALL looked fine... low milage but it's currently on the 3rd yes 3rd motor from the company... all the others blew with in a week of install despite proper install and even double fluid changes to flush out any old crap from sitting....
So you could be jumping into a NIGHTMARE of a situation... but it could also be a good deal...
keep your old motor just in case.

Well the thing is i have a knocking rod on my D series and this was my upgrade up, and hes buying my motor for $400, so $1600 for the whole swap. And it was in a 98 Coupe till a week ago, so i dunno , do you guys think i should risk it or back out?

What is your budget?
What is your budget?
that's not too bad...
keep in mind that those usdm miles are WAY WAY better than the allegid 30-40k on a jdm motor...
here's why.
A. JDM owners KNOW they're going to get rid of the whole car at 30-40k mi... which means that most BEAT THE TAR out of them and just as many hardly ever if ever change the oil
B. the JDM motor has been sitting in a junkyard in japan for close to 13 years... NOT ideal by any stretch.
Also the ls will have WAY more torque out of the box... now some say this isn't as important but I say lowend torque NEVER hurt.
That's the route I'd go unless the guy emphatically states that if ANYTHING goes wrong it'll be fixed.... The 30 day should be ok but if he only covers a full blow then you're sol because something small could go (indicating future break down)... and he says it still runs....
It's just shakey ground....
either way swapping your motor when you can't really afford it isn't the best idea... you almost always run into incidentals.

Like I said... it was already a good deal but if you're short on money in general and can't afford it if something goes wrong on day 31 then it's still not a good idea...
I'm not trying to scare you off of it by any stretch...
I would do it and drive the **** out of it for the 30 days (not so much to cause long term damage to a good motor... but certainly enough to make sure if it's gunna blow due to it's shape... it does so quickly so it's covered.).
Has this dude installed similar year motors from the same place with no problems...
I know for a fact that my buddies shop is ready to fly to japan and kick the tar out of anyone in a honda.

I would do it, but be prepared to put some maintenance money into it.... New water pump, timing belt, belt tensioner, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc.... I would want to have all the seals replaced as well... But that's just me.

CA laws on swapping is that u cant swap older year into a newer one...so yea you will have problems. unless you know some people that will *help* you out. not such a good idea legal wise. hope this helps
