Default Emergency brake help

for some odd reason my emergency brake light keeps flashing on and off every so often.......... driving home from work it stayed on for 5 mins.............. before you ask my e-brake was totally off and i pulled over to be sure..........

could this be a sign of needing to change my rear shoes? also my emergency brake cable needs to be adjusted so im thinking it may be because it is loose.......... any ideas would be sweet.......
