Brake caliper question...

I noticed that my caliper sliding black boot if it is slightly sliced open. Do I need to replace this if it is cut? Does that mean grease for the caliper is gone?

Yes it should be replaced. Water, dirt, brake dust, you name it can get in there cause you some serious problems.
