What companies make them? What are the pros and cons of going distributorless? When is it neccessary to use?

i know the TEC III comes dristributor less, it's a fine aftermarket ECU, hard to tune, but it's like tunning a stock ECU.

I like what Bob Norwood says about electomotive(tec 3) products. "you can hate me now or you can hate me later because I can tell you its a POS now, or I can tune it and you can have problems and hate me later."

LOL

Any real standalone will allow you to run distributorless. Autronic, motec, or DFI.

Electromotive has never been hard for us to tune nor has it ever given us any problems.

I cant afford a stand alone right now. But if you have any other suggestions(ARTURBO) for a distributorless ignition then let me know.

aem is coming out with a 4 and 8 chanel cdi that when used with the ems can be setup to run in dividual coils. you cant get rid of the dizzy cause you still need the crank and cam sensors inside the dizzy, but you wont be firing any spark through it..

and i agree w/that quote by bob norwood... electromotive is crap, id hate to know i owned it. id rather have carbs than run a tec2

What do you not like about TEC2????? I would rather have it than an
AEM plug-n-blow. Just wondering what your beef with Electromtotive units is?
Like i said it has never given us any problems, nor has it ever held us back in anyway.

i have used a tec2.. maybe the tec3 is better dunno.

i tuned a porsche 914 race car on it. the maps are tiny, something like 8X6?? i cant rember, the software is archaic, you cant do throttle based load (the car had ITB's and couldnt get a good map signal). its a very basic standalone, id hate to try to use that on someones daily driver.

have you ever used the aem ems? give me any car they have a base map for and ill be done with it in a day, idleing and driving better than it was stock. if you blow stuff up w/the ems you need to go back to tuning school.

add it up, 1200 for a standalone that uses all teh stock sensors and plugs into the stock harness and has wwwwaaaaaaaaaaayyy more options than just about anything on the market (boost control, traction control, nitrous control w/secondary fuel and ign maps, anti lag, etc etc etc etc) and some of the best data loging software there is ...... or spend ... hell i cant find a place online that even says how much it is..

Well, funny you say that cause my car is daily driven with a TEC2 EMS and it idles and runs like prefect. We also have a daily driven All motor LS that runs ITB's an WE have it running and idling pretty damn good for having the biggest cam on the market in it. We have been running TEC2 on cars for well over 3 years on daily driven set-ups. And when i say daily driven, i mean my car is driven at the very least 30 miles a day. Sorry, you dont like it, but it works out very, very well for us. Maybe you should get someone that knows how to tune a TEC2 to tune those cars you have worked with, im sure we could get em running perfect. You say if you already have a base map you could tune a car in a day? If we have no base map at all we could tune a car to 400 HP and be daily driven in a couple hours. The AEM is a descent unit, and like you said it is only $1200, however you still need a Distributor(which we all know hondas distributors suck!) and a an Ignition amp of some sort. And yeah the TEC2 has an 8x8 map, but the TEC3 which is all you can get now has a 16x16 table.

i like my 18X24 maps, traction control, automapping and boost control so ill stick to my aem ems...

as for support.. nuthing beats aem's support of the ems. free updates and a forum specificly for the ems that all the engineers frequent..

i guess it comes down to what you have learned... ill stick to the ems cause it works better for me.. and you stick w/the tec3 i only spent one day using it so im sure more experience w/it would help. but it only took me 2 days to completly figger out the ems, now i can do any car with it in about 1/2 a day...

i guess what ever standalone you use is only as good as the tuner.. it will only do what you tell it to do
