Default Breather filters: BS or actually useful?

ive been wondering this a long time since i've seen many a tubocharged honda with them. according to many of the D16 guys @ dseries.org, they are unnecessary and could potentially harm the engine over time.

so what do you guys think? I think they are BS, but my car isn't back from getting turbo'd yet. anyone have any experience w/ these valve cover breathers?

i put a breather on after i put my intake on and it didn't have a hole for the breather. No problems here.

My friend's breather sounds like a supercharger at high RPMs though LOL

i think if you're boosting, its better to have a breather. the whole point of it is to keep the air pressure down in the cylinder head. if you're boosting, you dont want air being pushed into the cylinder head, where theres supposed to be atmospheric pressure. im pretty sure charge pipes dont even have provisions for the engine breather.

on a n/a car tho, those catch can things look waaay cooler than breathers

SEARCH , it's been covered quite well....Not a good idea on a N/A engine. Can cause leaking gaskets and the like. Don't do it.

Now on boosted engines, yeah that's okay, but a catch can is better IMO.

I thought it blows air out.

I saw a guy here in town which had a b16 in crx, he had a tube pipe going from him valve cover to the fender well of the car.

My turbo kit runs the breather hose to the turbo inlet pipe, right after the air filter. So no pressure to the head!

Yes, a breather is to release pressure out of the engine. Otherwise, you can blow gaskets and cause leaks.

I just learned this, this weekend....

it blows out as you rev higher...etc etc.....it relieves pressure....so the filter does nothing but filter the air before is exits....it does not filter air in but filters the air out.....whats the point...I was told that the lil filters can also clog and restrict the air coming out and damage the engine...

No, not the breather on the PCV valve.

On your valve cover you have an outlet for oil vapors to travel to the intake pipe to get reburned in the block. From the intake manifold vapors are sent through the PCV valve that are also sent back to the intake manifold to get reburt. So by adding a catch can you will elimanate the vapors that cause lower octane. Also, by adding a breather to the valve cover it will get soaked in oil over time, also dirt will creap in the then clough the ventilation of the valve cover...

I put a breather on my ca because I was sick of the oil getting into my intake tube. It is noramlly done in lieu of a catch can on NA engines becaus of blow by issues. I have some major blow by atm so I am using the breather. I don't see how it will hurt my car considering it isn't that much different from having the tube from the intake connected to it. A deeper explanation woudl help greatly.

Its not that difficult of a device, rather basic. Without a breather, excess pressure build up will cause gaskets and seals to blow out causing leaks and loss of fluids.

For emissions reasons, the breather must be fed back into the engine.

For a car owner, you can put a filter breather on it, and you need a filter or else if you left it open you can get crap inside your engine.

Hooking the breather to a charged pipe on a forced induction setup kinda defeats the purpose of a breather.
