what would happen if you installed your balance shafts w/out the bearing?!
as i sat there reassembleing my stock h22, i remembered looking into the balance shaft hole and trying to see the bearings in my built one. so i took the 1 shaft out and the bearing was clear as day in this engine.
i ran the other engine for about 600 mi w/the shafts active, then about 1500mi. w/out them.
i never had any probs w/it (untill a little mis-calulation w/ign. timing and n20, but thats another story).
my question is, if there really wasnt any bearings in there, would i have known in that time period, or would it just be quietly eating away and destroying my engine from the inside out!?

well firstly i'm pretty sure the balance shaft would just sieze all together. and since that is in time with the teeth of your timing belt..it'd tear that away..then it'd cause your timing belt to jump ship..and you to possibly drop valves. running anything that used to have bearings without them is never a good idea. whew.
well i know its not a good idea...i just started to 2nd guess if they were in there. they both run off the crankshaft, but different gears, so i dont think it would affect the t-belt, but i agree w/you on the sezieing up part...
while the engine is out, i might pull one out and see, i just hate doing extra work, if its not needed.
