the shifter heats up well warms up after about a half hours worth of driving...is that normal or could i get away with covering the linkage in heat-tape?

the same thing happens to me.... and i recently broke my short shifter and had to put the stock one back on... now it doesnt get hot, i just thought of that! i think its because the shifter is so close to the exhaust pipe and most after market shifters are aluminum which transfer heat much better than steel

Autozone short throws break...

And you're pretty much dead on LSTEG96, aluminum disipates heat better than steel.
