Exactly the OEM ones are not braided.

this makes no sense.
you're trying to avoid SS brake lines, but you want OEM, which you think are steel braided?
I'd go with goodridge, or any of the numerous brake lines that are offered.

no they arent,
there made out of ******* rubber, and when you press the breaks they expand.
**** oem rubber brake lines,
i tried to order goodridge from nippon 126.00 but they were on backorder, so i ordered "earls" from optionsautosalon for 100.00 shipped

I did a bunch of research into it, and I'd get Earl's... they have a stress relief fitting at the connection point so that they won't fray out where they connect with the hardline like some other brands. The only downside is that they aren't coated like so many others are, and the dirt can get in between the braid and the tube and degrade it by rubbing... but you can coat 'em yourself.
Go Earl's.
Go Earl's.

OEM brakelines are crap. i had a car with less than 8,000 jmiles on it onvderted to stainlesss line and i felt noticable improvement. i woud coat the linkes in a rubber so that dirt cannot get in.... then again goodridge has a lifetime warranty, so who cares how durable your first set is
Vince,
I'd probably use a length of heatshrink tubing and sleeve them in it, and then use mild heat to lightly seal the ends of the lines as much as possible as close to the fittings as possible.

I thought the whole point of this post was what you should get BESIDES oem, but it sounds like you've already made up your mind, so remind me again what the point was? BTW earls or goodridge=

How about this:
OEM costs a lot. I would love it but cost wise it's not in my budget. What is a good alternative other than something for "race" use?

There is stock and aftermarket. There is no aftermarket that isn't going to be for "racing." But its not like you can't use racing lines on the street.

I wouldn't trust Pep Boys with anything that prevented my vehicle from becoming a massive rolling death trap.
