Helmet Cleaner/Refresher
My helmet, well, smells horrible due to my fat head sweating. Is there an easy way at home to clean a helmet without a removable liner?
What about keeping it fresh on a hot as hell race weekend?

do you wear a balaclava? it is supposed to help since it will soak up the sweat - and is easier to wash. Sorry, that is more of a preventative than a remedy.
I guess you could try some febreeze?

I have a little spritzer bottle of Helmet Fresh (got it at a motorcycle show) but I'd bet Fabreze would help too. In the past I have had the helmet funk issues but a balaclava will keep it fresher. A fresh balaclava for each day then wash them with your other nomex undies.
I febreeze my helmet before storing it. It still smells fresh and clean. Although, autocross doesn't give me much time to really stink it up even on the 100 degree days.
OMG - the smell of Fabreze or some stink like that in my helmet would make me puke. Get a Proban cotton balaclava to soak up the noggin juice.

I was looking for a simple cotton balaclava, I dont really need any of the Nomex stuff just yet. Where can you get one?

Febreze works well on carpets, but don't put it on something that will touch your face.
Wash it as best you can, and maybe put a little talc powder in there.

Yea I was actually going to say something about the "head socks" you get at Andretti. You can buy one from them... or did you just jack one?

I just took it. I figure at $18 per 8 minutes it should be included. Might as well include the fake race suit as well.

I'm with PorkChop, a little Woolite in a big plastic tub sitting in the bathtub. Gentle pressure on the liner to get the suds in and out , and then plenty of cool water to rinse. When it runs clean press out the water gently and then press it with towels etc. Let air dry with a fan for a couple of days and you are good to go.

That's the ticket. When I was racing karts, I had 2 balaclava's and a bottle of Febreeze. Works pretty good. I've heard that helmet fresh is pretty decent too, but haven't tried that yet.

I agree with this method also. that's essentially what I used to do with my helmet from off road motorcycling.
to dry it a bit faster, I used to set it on the air conditioning exhaust heat exchanger at work. I would wash it at the start of my shift and after 8 hours, the helmet interior would be completely dry.

I let mine go au natural
, so I can be assured no novice would dare grab my helmet by mistake!
I am just joking of course, I like Fabreeze (to freshen) and Lysol (kills ****).

Dry clean?
I would SO not do that until my helmet manufacturer wrote me a letter specifically telling me it was OK. I would completely expect the solvents to disolve the glues holding the thing together...
I could see baking soda - non-toxic, not stanky, not irritating.
