I searched, couldn't find anything, how much transmission fluid does a 98 Automatic Accord LX take? Thanks in advance.

'98 EX auto 4-cyl holds 6.6 quarts total, but only 2.6 quarts drains out. The rest stays in the torque converter & other hideouts.

Well, if you need ot flush ALL the tranny fluid out, then how do you get it out?

Mine has a "vinigar smell", so I changed it......................now it smells again. I did the 2 QT route....................

It mixes together with the stuff that didn't drain. You could drive 50 miles, change 2.6 quarts again, & repeat a couple times.

Some places do a transmission 'flush'. They hook up some kinda pump to flush lots of fluid thru. For the price of a flush, you could buy what... 20 quarts?

So if I drain the fluid out of my Tranny it would only need about 3 quarts to fill it back up?

meece0927: I would measure exactly how much fluid you drained (which should be 2.6qt) and add exactly that amount. This gets tricky if your trans is leaking fluid. In which case I'd fully drain and just add the 2.6qt which is the specification.

Evidently it's bad to overfill ATF. So the fluid has to be fairly exact. I'm going to put in a new (used) trans in my 98 Accord 4cyl Auto and maybe 2-4qts of ATF is in the replacement trans. So I don't really know how much new fluid I should really pour in once its installed. I will possibly underfill and slowly add more and more till the fluid dipstick registers "correct" value. Problem is I don't know how much I trust that dipstick especially with ATF temp variations.

That's about right. But it comes down to how many quarts are in the transmission sump, how much drains out, etc.

Pull the plug, drain it, refill, start engine, select every gear to charge those circuits, pull dipstick wipe clean, reinsert, pull out, check fluid level, add more if needed.
