Pics of my crapped out clutch
Well I had been having clutch/tranny problems off and on for the past few months. I know I should have gotten it fixed, but didn't have the funds to do so. So when finally the clutch crapped out on me, I knew I had to get a new clutch. I couldn't get the tranny to go into gear while the motor was running.
I decided on the Exedy Organic clutch. Right now I'm just still breaking it in. It's at about 440 miles right now. But most of it was a 3 hr round-trip on the highway I made, so I'll wait until about 500 miles to start beating on it. The pedal is noticably stiffer, but bearable. Although the engagement point is pretty high off the floor. Even with my stock clutch the engagement point was high also. On with the pics...
It doesn't look too bad right here.

This is the "underside" of the disc. The side that is against the pressure plate. As you can see it was scraping against the pressure plate and caused some of the material to break off.

See this metal piece?

Well, it goes here.

It helps keep the spring in place.

BTW, this is the stock clutch with 73k miles on it.

Mine did the same thing, but w/ 135K miles on it.
It wasn't slipping or anything, but then one day after I rode out 2nd gear to redline, it suddenly got hard to go into gear... luckily I was able to make the 150-mile trip home (almost all interstate w/ little to no shifting thank goodness).

Well when I bought the car from a Ford dealership it had 55k on it. So I've driven it for 18k. It was probably a trade-in. Everything about the car was clean. I'm assuming I'm a second owner and the previous owner did not beat on it at all. The mechanic at the shop I had the new clutch installed told me "everything down there looked clean...the previous owner must have been an old lady or something."
The only sort of racing I do is occasianal trips to the local dragstrip. Most of the time I did 4k-5k launches slipping the clutch. But when I used drag radials, I did 6k launches. I'm sure those took its toll on the clutch.
Well here's the story on when the clutch failed. I was on the highway and shifted from 4th to 5th. Then I heard a grind. I stepped on the clutch and it would not disengage. I was fucked! I wanted to take the next exit, but was afraid the clutch was finally gone, so I didn't exit until I got closer to home. So I exit while in 5th gear and hoped that the light stayed green, and it did. I had to slow down to about 25mph (still in 5th) and of course the car didn't accelerate really well.
I pulled to side of the road to see if I could "fix" the problem. But no. So I just put it into 2nd, start the car while in gear, and drive a few miles to a parking lot where a friend of mine came to tow me home. It happened a few months before when I did a redline, full-throttle 1-2 shift. I was able to get the clutch working again that time, though and eventually it returned to "normal" operation.

just in case, with the tranny off, spin the main shaft and see if there is rough movement or grinding. The same thing happened to me, and along with a destroyed clutch came a destroyed bearing for the main shaft.

Hell yeah, now speaking of clutch issues...might be time for another clutch

That's not crapped out. This is crapped out:

Just recently replaced my shredded RPS Turbo Clutch with an Exedy Organic Racing clutch and 12lb ACT fw.

It took 5 years of hard driving before it finally gave out.

If you're asking me, then probably it was my driving.

my oem clutch did similar things at around 90k. But the spring actually came out and bounced around the bell houseing. It sounded bad, but still griped like a **** on the way home before putting on my new one. No slipage.
hey mine did almost the same thing, except for the actual spring came out and got in the way. i had the same symptoms as you but i looked at it as it w an excuse to get a better clutch and to learn some stuff
so i learned how to do a clutch job in my garage all alone and i got an ACT clutch
