Default Rattle on the way down... any ideas?

I have been hearing my car having some type of a rattle, almost sounds like its below the engine itself for some time now. I can not always duplicate the noise. When I give it gas in N, over 4000, then let it drop down, around like 2000 down theres a rattle, almost sounds like an exhaust rattle (up front), but I dont think so. A friend told me that it sounded like something like a cam, or a lifter was off... I dont know much at all about the engine itself, so I really would love your advice.

I have AEM pulleys/Intake/and H&R springs.

Also, I may add, I have a smoke that comes out of my exhaust when shifting, but only when getting on it. It is a greysih smoke, best described. Other than that, I have no issues. When my A/C is on, the car seems to have a deeper and more violent start right before Vtec kicks in, 4-5K rpm, where it rattles over near the intake itself (a different rattle).

Thats all I can think about, any ideas suggestions?

well depending on the company and type of intake, that rattle could actually be the intake rattling against something. ie: fender well, battery tie down etc. But the rattle that you hear letting it "wind down" is tricky! Mine has that same rattle but around 4300, and i am assuming 99.9% that it is an exhaust rattle where this stupid chick rear ended me going like 10 miles or less no damage other than breakin the weld on the exhaust. So if you have been rear ended or backed into anything, that would be what i checked first. Other than that, your power steering pump could be loose and rattling or anything that isnt the block and head could rttle against anything else! And it probally only rattles "winding Down" because of the vibrations. You could be burning smoke because you use synthetic oil and it burns little by little if you drive it hard! If not i dont know, good luck! Smoke that is a bad sign normally has to do with valves though ( for your info. )

hope all that helps, good luck

thanks, its an AEM intake. I will go and check to make sure the filter is locked down 100% tonite on it, since it sounds like it is all the way up there in that corner. I havent been rear ended, but I did just order an Apexi Exhaust, so maybe it goes away when I get that.

If it isnt, is this something I should have a compression test done to look at? Or how do you tell about the valves?
