Default Where should o2 sensor go on obd1 ecu car?

I'm thinking about going 2.5" exhaust for my obd1 gsr in the near future. Just wondering does the obd1 o2 sensor need to be placed inside the cat? or can it be placed in the bung found at the end of DC JDM/ITR JDM 4-1 headers? tia
