Default Making my own octane booster

I have a 96 accord, 98 h22, and 80hp Direct Port NX. Im in colorado and the highest pump gas is 91 octane. The track is about 45minutes from here to get racing fuel. First of all, what octane should I be running for my nitrous? I have been using 91 this whole time.

Second, I was looking at octane boosters. Which one is good? Heard about plugs turning orange.

Finally, I did a search and found out how to make it using toulene and xylene. Now, do you just add it straight in with the pump gas, or do you have to make a mixture with something else first? What is mineral spirits? Do stores just sell "mineral spirits" or is it just a name for an additive? Also, what octane is toulene and when do you mix it with pump gas, do you just average the numbers out to get the final octane number? For example, if I have 9 gallons of 91 octane, and I add 1 gallon of toulene at say 110octane, do I get 92.9 octane? If I used 8gal of 91 and 2 of 110, do I get 94.8? I dont know what octane I should be aiming for with my nitrous.

Im also kind of scared to add stuff to my gas, usless its just a straight addin and no mixing.

on this one site, http://www.gnttype.org/techare....html it has formulas up top using various octane products like toulene, but then on the bottom it has a formula to make octane booster. Which do I follow?

Should I try products like the NOS black bottle or VP octane boosters?

Thanks

when i went to the tracks i just added a gallon of xylene and about 1/3 quart of deisel oil and that was it. i know i needed something else but i didn't have time. worked just fine for me. i also read that it's alright as long as you don't leave it in your tank overnight...so made sure i burnt it all up that day and added a full tank of regular 93 octane.

You can add just straight toulene. You want to make sure you do not go over a 30% mix, as it will become too difficult to combust. Also, it can deteriorate rubber at high concentrations. there are a lot of guys in the wrx community who run high mixes of it (damn super octane sensitive cars) daily.

Toulene is a paint thinner... Go to your local art and hobby and or paint shops. Call around and ask around...

Is it better to make that one mixture with mineral spirits and oil, or is just toulene fine? Also, is it bad if it sits in the car overnight? There is no way that I can mix 9 gallons of gas with 1 gallon of toulene (or whatever it may be) and expect to run out the tank in one day. Also, are there different kinds of toulene?

Thanks

mix it at the ratio specified in what I linked you to...I've had it in my audi plenty, it doesn't cause any problems unless going faster is a problem

TOLUENE

From the links I have read, toluene(sp) is ok alone. A gallon of Xylene is supposed to be mixed with a bottle of Marvel mystery oil and like 3 oz. of power steering fluid. The oil is a lubricant and the power steering is a detergent. Both toluene and xylene are about $8 a gallon.

8 bucks a gallon unless you buy it in bulk. IMHO, if you have room in the garage it's MUCH easier to just get a 55 gallon drum of C16 Another thing you can do is run a seperate fuel cell and pump with straight race gas in it that just feeds your nitrous kit. 4 gallon tank in the back, small fuel pump, rig up the lines, and shazzam.

great link prod.

i noticed the links dont provide any formulas for race gas over 100 octane. does anyone have the secret to making something similar to C16?

Do you mean with the marvel mystery oil and ps fluid, or just straight with the regular pump gas?

Im sure its ok alone, but is it recommended to mis it like xylene with those 2 other additives? Where do you get that marvel oil? Also, is this mixture safe to store in smaller containers so you dont have to mix it all the time? Im racing on wed, so ill probably just use a gallon of toluene with 9 gals of 91 octane. 10%, maybe 15%.

Where can you get that marvel mystery oil? Is it online only?

Do you guys know how if toluene is ok with fuel solenoids? I was told that octane boosters were bad for the fuel solenoid seals. Toluene is a component of octane boosters, so is the effect the same? Doesnt NX sell octane boosters?

you can get marvel mystery oil at almost any auto shop and also at Walmart!! you don't want to get those cheap octane boosters they sell at the store, it's a waste of money. make your own...you can raise your octane level to whatever you want, save $$$, and have it avaible whenever you need it.

1. Do you guys know how this stuff is with fuel solenoids for nitrous setups? This is my main concern.

2. Do you recommend either toluene or xylene over the other?

3. Is it better for both to be mixed with MMO and tranny oil, or is that just xylene?

why is it bad to leave toluene in the gas tank overnight?

I'm not sure exactly how much Marvels Mystery oil to add, but it sure isn't the whole dang bottle. If I remember correctly, it's more like a capfull or two...do a little more research as too how much MM oil to add...again, definately not one bottle...

With a Direct port kit and a H22, you should be "ok" on pump gas ( 91 where you live ), but the homemade brews would give you that extra window of safey.

I ran a zex dry kit @75shot for 2 bottles on my D15B2, so I'd think your MUCH larger engine with MUCH better nitrous system could last you..

I think the best Idea is the seprate small fuel cell filled with race gas idea. that way, you only use race gas during "nitrous time" and don't use nearing as much ( IE the nitrous kit is using the race gas, but the motor injectors aren't ).

1 1/2 gallon Jaz fuel cell, stock honda fuel pump, and 1 1/2 gallon of race gas = never worry about knock again.

BTW the store bought "octane boosters" that claim 8 points in octane rating really equals .8, so If you add this stuff to 91 oct, then you'll get 91.8 oct. !!! What a great deal !!!

The xylene mixing etc works well too.

Interesting.
Do you guys know if I can make any of these mixtures in bulk (~5 gallons) and leave it sitting around with out worrying about it going bad?

same deal, just fill up with race gas (instead of pump) and then add toluene.

also , the most $ I've seen for a gallon of toluene is $5/gallon

Toluene and Xylene are fine. Home Depot sells Xylene, which has a higher octane of the two (about ~117 I want to say)

Do the math and you can average out the differences (between pump and what you add).

For seals...Marvel Mystery Oil (couple tablespoons)
