Cutting AEM CAI into short ram
i think that's a jim dandy idea...
but if you cut the pipe before the support bracket (which i know i would have to do with my gsr) your tube may be a little "floppy"
tube is a set diameter the whole length so filter will go on ok...

I believe that is why AEM makes short ram intakes along with cold air intakes, why cut and throw away what u pay money for, kinda defeats the purpose.
OR.... he can cut it in half, put the Bypass valve on it or,... keep it short ram in the winter and just put the cool air extension in, in the summer. thats what i do with my injen intake. the support bracket will only be for the extention, and where you put the filter on the short ram just get a bracket and fasten it down. i think its a good idea if you do either of thoes two, but if you are just cutting it to just have a short ram i think thats dumb and a waste like they said before.

Why cut it when they have short ram. Just trade your Cold Air in and get Short Ram or sell it and get the Short Ram. Good luck i wouldn't cut it to make a short ram lol.

some people don't just toss parts aside that they bought (yes, i know he could sell it...)
and buy new intakes every week...
(who said every week, dude? you're trippin)
ok, nevermind
I only want to cut it because I don't believe the by pass will work on splashes, it will work in deep water. I think it is a good idea to convert a CAI into a short ram. But cutting a good piece of tube and losing horsepower, well, that's another issue.
If you go to aempower.com and go to FAQ, their engineers believe that the short ram intake is better than the CAI...........go figure!!!!!!

I had this same idea!!! I live in washington, the land of endless rain and big evil puddles, so i was thinking of cutting up my CAI and getting a rubber fitting so i can put it back to full length in spring and summer. In my opinion, it's a great idea, cuz you're not wrecking the AEM CAI, you're just modifying it a little...

in general a short tube will give you more top end hp (AFAIK, no flames please
)oh here it is from aem (redone site...WTF?!?! yuk! frames? just say no!!!)
Q: Why is there only a Short Ram intake system for some applications?
A: "Our Research & Development team has discovered that certain applications make more power with shorter intake tracts than those with long intake tracts. This is determined through repeated testing of various intake piping for every application we manufacture," Says Chief Engineer John Concialdi, "In some cases the length and diameter of the pipe plays a more important role than inlet temperature (within reason) in making power in a useable rpm range."

Why not go back to stock?
Short ram = stock tube without box. Both suck in hot air! Yeah!
Insulate your air filter from the engine bay, use anything you'd like to for the pipe, but insulate it too. Feed the custom filter box via a tube going down behind your turn signal. Viola! No water worries, and still a fresh supply of air.

don't cut your aem cai. that would just be a waste of money. if you want a short ram so go buy another intake and swap your filter around. don't be a fool and waste money like that.
