Default coolant problem with 5th generation accord

Hello all,

I have a 97 accord that I just finished installing a turbo. I am really impressed with the power that i have however, i am having a problem with my temp gauge occasionally skyrocketing. I checked my thermostat and it works fine. I have enough coolant inside my engine and radiator. I am not leaking coolant inside my engine cuz I checked. Now I know that because I installed a turbo onto my engine that it will make things a lot hotter plus my front mount intercooler is blocking half of my radiator but it still should be within reason on the temp gauge. I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem and what they did to remedy it? I am thinking that everything is fine with my engine and all I have to do is just get a higher rating temp sensor. I am not sure if that is really a good idea or not. I would appreciate anyones opinion. Thanks.

also, I know my head gasket is not blown because I just installed a Rdeal head gasket. Basically a thicker head gasket made out of copper.

i had the same problem and it was my thermostat

so it could be your radiator cap..

That would be a real easy inexpensive thing to try, even though you checked it & you think its OK.

just to give you guys an update. I changed out my thermostat and it still sky rockets. It only sky rockets after I am boosting and then come to a stop light and my engine is idleing. The needle pegs all the way to the top. after about 3 minutes and me turning the heater on it will start to cool down however the overflow tank for my radiator will overflow and blow coolant everywhere inside my engine. I am at a loss. help oh yeah i also flushed my coolant and refilled it.

This is a shot in the dark, but you are bleeding air from the coolant system when you refill it by loosening the coolant bleeder bolt, right? The heater switch is all the way to hot? Running the engine at idle with the radiator cap off and topping up coolant until no more air bubbles escape?

It almost sounds like an air bubble making it's way through the system. It could also be that your fans aren't running, since it happens when sitting still.

Hey dude, sorry to hear about your troubles!
My tought is..Since everything *seems* in order..Maby the intercooler blocking the radiator half way can cause that problem..
See, boosting your engine that way causes it to work really hard, so the temp goes wayyy up! Since you are going really fast, the airflow going trough the rad is enough, and if the fan goes on its a plus to refreshen it! but when you stop, only the fan is cooling the engine, less air goes trough the rad, and trust me, blocking half of it doesnt help!! Dont wonder why they left space around the rad.. Kind of the same problem when you have a blocked termostat, while you drive on the highway, no prob, but when you stop, gotta get the heat out some way, you open the heater
Hope it helped u to figure things out!

im just guessing, but maybe you put too much coolant in, and when the fluid gets hot there's not enough room in the overflow tank so the pressure builds up in the system causing inadequate flow.

what trhis guy said. Also I would see about changing the location of the intercooler so that the top half of the rad is clear.

here is the last update. I finally figured out what was going on with my car as far as why my temp gauge would sky rocket after boosting. I changed the radiator cap and it didn't make a difference. I watched my cooling fan and it would come on at certain times like after i was done boosting. don't ask me how i was watching the fan. i just know. anyways, by the time the fan would come on it was too late. the coolant and engine is so hot that it reacted first by boiling over the radiator so much that it would blow coolant everywhere through my overfill tank. to resolve the problem i just installed another fan between my a/c condensor and my intercooler and wired it to my ignition. now my needle doesn't move at all. It stays just below the halfway mark and never goes any higher. Thanks to everyone for their advice. appreciate it.
