Default what to look for when buying a used block?

I'm thinkin bout buying either a ls shortblock {$200} or longblock{$300]. The block needs to be sleeve from what I'm told and I have no problem sending it out to get sleeved. But what should I look out for before buying it? All I really want is the core so that I can have a spare ls block to send out. Should I just buy the longblock or just the short?

Check for scoring or carbon build up. If your looking for just a spare, then short block.

But for another 100 bucks wouldn't the extra parts from the longblock be useful?
And for carbon buildup where would it be in the cylinder?

if you're getting a head for an extra $100, jump all over that deal!
