DOHC ZC build OPINIONS...
I wanna boost my ZC....and in my head I have this...to "build the block on a budget"
DOHC ZC:
VX rods or use LS rods (gotta notch the block)
a6 pistons (not sure on pistons yet)
mill head .3mm
y8 metal HG
Balance the crank, UR Crank Pulley, 13lbs Flywheel (stock lightened)
would this hold up 7lbs easy?? I'm looking for 10.2:1 final compression , boosting on DIY turbo kit. Bare with me I'm still learning, I know about fuel and stuff still looking stuff up.
FUEL: Lude 340 injectors, 255 fuel pump, Fuel controler (HKS or Apex)
Reason I don't go for DSM injectors is that iwas told to stay away from them and LUDE are cheaper...haha
Opinions are great guys, hook me up, I'm looking to start buying all these parts to boost by December, maybe later if I get into NASA this fall.

That may help some w/ CR & stuff. As far as the pistons, you will need some high CR pistons for teh A6 in order to get the CR you are looking for. You may also want to look into getting the LS valve train put in for some security for those high revs that you'll want w/ a boosted ZC. There was a post about the valve train a few weeks ago. You could also go all custom w/ teh valve train- you can view all of the necessary specs in KeithV's sig. I am not definatievly positive on the amount of work needed for the rods and stoff. g/l, let us know how it comes out.

I'll still be reving to the stock rev limit, but better safe than sorry right!!
THanks for the link, but I'm not sure on the piston to deck height and check valve clearance.....this is my first project.....and daily driver so...haha help would be nice...
I did put everything OEM ZC with 2 layer head gasket and it gave me 10.0xxx: 1 compression not sure how the clearance and deck height numbers t hough...

In my opinion if your engine runs good to start with that's a waste of time.
A stock block ZC will handle 7 psi without any problems.
I drove a stock block zc with greddy kit boosting 7-8psi for over a year.

notch the block for ls rods, also have then shot-peened, it will help also. why do you want the 10 to 1 compression, with boost you should go low so that you can play with boost a little more, you may loose some out of boost performance but it will allow you to boost a bit more.
Don't you have to notch the block for b16 rods, but not for b18 ones?
BTW y8 headgasket is not a match for a DOHC zc. Compare the two gaskets - they are different.

hks makes two types of head gaskets for the zc, bead and gommet, the bead gives you a 9.9 c/r and the gommet gives you a 10.0 c/t both go for about $117 from takakaira.com.
I have a spare set of stock cams to get reground......that a good idea...crowwer does em but I heard they brake......
web cams does regrinds too.....opinions??
This is a budget build that should be realiable...I'm not looking for low 12's...just power in general!!!

webcams doesn't make boost application for the zc only n/a and drag. hks is the only one with a billet boost application (not regrind), ef-1 also makes cams for the zc but their boost applications is only for a high hp zc application.
HMMMMM...HKS is $$$$ I might just do the Crower to whatever spec you'd like or what t hey recommend....cams will be later.....for now I need to know what pistons I can use.....
Stock LS rods shotpeened is what I'm going to use....what pistons would you recommend on a budget??

IM exospeed- they have very good prices on regrinds (so low that I will let Wil tell you) & they may have a boost application for your needs. They have a pretty good rep- that's who I will be going to for my cam regrinds.

yeah I've talked to Wil before....he had no spare cams for a zc laying around...I'll have to hit him up now that I have spare cams...

Anyone know about the 1jz pistons with b16a rods??

I'm pretty sure there was a post in the archived section regarding this. It's a locked post now but it had a lot of information you could use. good luck

Found the t hread but with the stock ZC compression being 9.5:1 with the GTE pistons my compression would be 7.5:1......**** that...too low...hahaha...
Any ideas what OEM piston I can use??
Any ideas what OEM piston I can use??
they're aren't any OEM pistons to use that won't give you a 8.5 to 9.5 compression. you would have to go aftermarket: endyne, je, or custom.
well stock compression is 9.5: 1 right??? I'm willing to go 8.5:1 thats not bad for daily driving....I just want something more reliable than the zc pistons......that will hold the boost more...
I'm just learning so thanks for the help........I can always mill the head a lil bit and use a diff head gasket to get my compresion to 9:1 for a good area for booost, LS rods/ some OEM piston.....right??

yes the stock compression is 9.5, but there is NO OEM piston that would give you an 8.5 compression, you are stuck with aftermarket - endyn 8.5, or je 9.2, or custom. all OEM pistons besides a zc piston will put you around the 7.6 c/r. HKS makes two different head gaskets for the zc, that would bump your compression to .4 or .5 points, so if you went with endyn, your c/r would be around 8.9 to 9.0, or je 9.6 to 9.7. You are going to have to spend money on aftermarket piston not OEM if you want more than 200whp, on a daily driven basis.
damn and I wanted to keep this cheap....cuz this is my learning motor..haha....
would I be fine with bigger rods and the stock pistons?? I'm going to run 7lbs on the block but want to be able to go bigger if I need to and have the boosted motor last me a good while....

What are your goals? Are you looking for 200whp? then you can keep the block stock, get a headgasket if you want to. 350-400whp? you're going to have to get aftermarket pistons and rods, then sleeving, the list goes on and on. 7 lbs is fine, if you are running a small turbo, 14g, 16g, 18g, t25, t28, t3, but 7 psi on a t3/t04e, t3/60-1, sc61, sc50 and you're going to be looking at more than 200whp.
my goals are not 1/4 mile times....or crazy amounts of power......
I want to learn and not blow up my daily driven hatch......I'm just trying to go the boost route to learn a bit, the zc is not that great but way better than my vx motor Ihad stock..haha......
7lbs will be run a toyo 1jz stock turbo......whatever that is... a friend is helpin gme build the manifold and stuff.....
