new engine
My stock 91 dx engine is essentially dead, and I need to swap a new engine into it before too long. The question is what is the best compromise between economy and performance? So far I'm leaning towards a b16, but between the engine tranny and mounts that I would be looking towards spending more than I'd like to. Is anything going to be any fun thats cheaper? Also how hard is this install going to be?
so i did some research on just what i would have to do to pull off a b16 swap on my own and i don't think i have the time to let my car rot while i amass that many parts and install them. as a result i think i'm going with just another d-series engine. what kinda options do i have there and what else will i need aside from the engine to do this install myself? (assuming i'll rent tools and a hoist)
look into the DOHC ZC its a straight bolt in and fairly simple swap (some work needed to adapt to the DX wiring)
rated at approx 130 hp and isnt that expensive.
there is tonnnes of info out there on it.
Im swaping a ZC into my 91 Si in about 2 weeks..

can't go wrong with the D16a6. Sounds like it's right up your alley. Not too difficult, straight bolt-in swap. No worries
D16z6 is another good choice.

Yeah, I would say a6, z6, or y8. I am going y8 because I want to find something newer with low miles...a little more expensive than z6 or a6 but it should last me a long long time. With a z6 or y8, the vtec will be an obstacle but should put out a little over 125hp. Can't wait! If I could only afford it now...

and i can just drop a z6 in and bolt it on? i need a new ecu? you guys think i need find somebody experienced to help me or is this possible to do myself?
thanks everybody
thanks everybody
both the y8 and z6 are bolt ins.............you should use your ef tranny though cuz i belive the newer d series tranny has difernet mounts. You can either use your ibntake and ECU, with a vtec activation, or upgrade to OBD 0. Its not very hard, conversion harneses are avalable. I wouldnt use the y8 unless you use a z66 ECU, the y 8 ecu is expensive to chip.
You dont buy a b16 for your car specifically,m you buy a 1st gen OBD0 b16 , then buy mounts, then shift linkage, then you modify you rwiring harness, then axles, its a lot of money . I bought an LS cheap you may wanna think about that route, or stick to the z6 idea. Then when you get more money turbo the z6. IT has great potential.
is a d16y7 a non-vtec equivilent of the d16y8? would it work to get a y7 for the cheaper cost and lower miles and put vtec headers on later? or just go z6, and gamble with the miles?
Your best bets are : A6, Z6, Y8, or a DOHC ZC. I had an A6 which is a great motor, but hard to find in good condition. I am currently running a DOHC ZC & it is a good solid engine. Aftermarket is available for the ZC so don't let others fool you- if you want it you can get it.If you ever plan on boosting get a ZC, if you want reliability & new I would say get a Z6 or Y8.
Everyones got an opinion.
Given your budget, you're probably going to be doing a D-series/ZC swap. There's nothing like getting halfway through a swap and running out of money. And it's a foregone conclusion that you will be doing the DPFI to MPFI conversion so start researching how to do that.
The dohc ZC is good...it seems like we're getting to the bottom of the barrel though. Recently they've been harder to find and the price has gone up. Benefits...128hp, 99% bolt in and dohc flows/revs better than sohc.
Sohc vtecs (d16z6 and d16y8) are an option. If you're seriously considering this, I would go ahead and run the p28 ecu and convert to obd-1. We're talking 125-127 hp. The engine will go in with little drama but the wiring is going to be a little more work. You will see people claim they're running the PM6 ecu with a vtec MSD switch or a VAFC or whatever...and then you will see a whole lot more people still trying to make that setup work well. Do the P28 and it will drive like stock.
Nobody has really mentioned the sohc ZC.
It's a lot easier to find and cheaper then the dohc zc. It's nearly identical to the D16a6 that come in the USDM si but this ZC makes 118 hp. Not sure how it makes the additional hp but my current guess is the camshaft.
And heck, D16a6s are cheap as rocks these days. It's just hard to find one still in decent shape.
Whatever you find or decide...do your homework.

i would suggest a sohc zc if your tight on funds. they are nice little motors and very inexpensive. noyan USA has a billion of them and they are located in manassas virginia. If you have the money go B-series, thats what i did and im very pleased.
thanks alot, some great responses there.
i think i'm going with the dohc zc as i was planning on boosting later on and i can get a 1st gen in my area easily.

ok, got a dohc zc and am about to put it in...
heard that dx models need a new ecu to run zc's though. what new ecu am i going to need and where is a good place to find one?
