D16 OPINIONS
I luz D series engines! At the local junkyard i can pick up a extra one for like $200, a head for 85-150, and a tranny for 120. Parts are everywhere for them. Anyway back to the topic, yes they are good for not ulta high boost applications. I mean if you run 10+psi on a stock block you'll brake a rod. You can get away with running 6-8psi with no problem with a Getthodyne/Zdyne setup with 450cc injectors. My advice is to save up for rods and pistons after you get your turbo setup together. That what i'm doing. It also helps to know how to weld and to have atlest a MIG welder on hand so you can make yourself a downpipe, charge pipes, etc... goto http://Homemadeturbo.com for more info
D series engines are fine if you'd like to boost. You can boost higher than 10 psi levels, but as said above, you really need to build that block up. I am still debating over a d16z6 turbo, or a B16 turbo in my CRX...so the fact that I cannot decide between a d series and a b series, should say a lot for the D series.
Sorry no turbo experince.
But other than that I LOVE MY D16.
170,000 miles still going strong.
Torquey little bastard.
Great throttle response.
I could be wrong, but it feels like it pulls harder than the B18A in my 91 teg.

Well, the 91 teg is a bit heavier than the CRX, too..so there's definently a different power to weight ratio there. Put that B18 in your rex and you might say something a bit different? I definently am a fan of the D's though....
im new to civics and im an amatuer when it comes to them, but im comming from the DSM's so im not new to the turbo scene, but what would be better the b16 or d16 for turbo because basically im making a fast turbo engine, and i need full potential
my only regret is that i ever got rid of my d16z...now i'm struggling to get a decent d16 back under my hood.
and i'm saying this after ZC and b18c1
i think the biggest reason is cost and how plentiful they are everyone is throwing in the b16a and tossing away their d16's, honestly you could boost on your stock block until the thing blows and just toss in another block for like $150-200 no sweat.
of course every engine has potential for high hp its just a matter of how much you want to spend but because d16's are just good engines and so cost effective i think its a great platform.

If you want an engine with "full potential" go with the B16. You could boost 10 psi on the stock internals with some engine management. Build it, and boost. If you just want a quick street vehicle, go D...but I'll give the potential to the B boys.

Not quite as "bullet proof" as the B series, but the d16a6 is definently not a bad engine. I'll admit that turbocharging one with stock internals makes me a bit nervous, which is why beefing it up isn't a bad idea.
D16a6+turbo = cheap and fast.. Plus, you can always rebuild them too handle pretty good boost.
You blew one up you can get one for mad cheap.
Here is my old homemade turbo set up.
HOw do you guys like my SMC+ location?

I really didn't think much of D16s until this weekend at the Charlotte meet. My best friend has a 91 Civic hatch Si with a D16 he has intake, header, exhaust, FPR, SAFC, and a Zex 55 shot kit, and he out ran a couple of cars that I thought would easily take him out. He rebuilt it like 2000 miles ago and did some minor mods to the block and head. To make a long story short I am highly impressed with the D16.
"If you want an engine with "full potential" go with the B16"
Andy yang ran a 10.3 with a 456whp d series so your claims are rediculous.
BTW the full potential of a D would be somewhere more than 2000 hp
I doubt you would need that much

How much money would it take to reach 500 hp with a D engine? How much with a B? Which would hold up longer? Answer those questions, make your choice on engine choice. I would happily take either engine. I'm going with a D-series turbo in my car, so don't try to make me look like I'm ragging on D's. I'm saying that if you want to hit 300 hp to the wheels, it's more common to go with an engine such as a B18...and go from there- than to start with a D. It's closer to your goal...although the price is a bit higher.
I am also comparing the B16, and the D-series. Give one person a B16, and give another a D16...give them $5,000 to spend on each engine...the results would speak for themselves, if the same work was done, and the work was done at the same quality. High-horsepower D-series engines are rare....whereas a B series making 370 isn't highly unusual for a street-driven car. Once again, I am not claiming either engine ALWAYS has the higher potential. Hell, you could take any engine, and make it put out high numbers, if your wallet is deep enough.
In EVERY one of my posts', I've given some kind of credit to the D-series. Do you really think that I am claiming B's are better? If so, then maybe it's not my claims that are ridiculous.

Mythos EF- my computer crashed, and it is now giving me a lot of trouble...but I've taken your points into thought...I'd really rather not argue over something stupid...
Mythos and I talked a bit on the instant message feature of the boards, and I got to hear him out, and what he had to said. I figured Instant messaging would be better, than filling the thread up with useless posts.

what u guys think of a d16z6 in a 91 civic 4dr totally built for boost would it pull my car really nice cus i was going to get a b18b and then getting a turbo but im undecisive so what u guys think i would really appreciate any answers!!!!
im not sure what to do with my motor in the crx i got. It has a a6 block and y8 head milled (32.8cc). Its compression is high , 10.8-11:1, also has intake ports polished, polished crank, jg vt35 regrind cam, zc exhaust manifold.... I want boost, but would i be better off selling this and buying a stock a6 or something else? whats the best d series for boost?
