I just bought this car from auction, It was in gear and I had in the front wheels in the air and when I tried to spin the wheels it didnt offer any resistance they just spun freely like it wasnt in gear at all, then I put it in reverse and tried to spin the wheels again and made a clicking noise.. Its a 2000 si with with a stock motor... Anyone have any info on what it could be? If it needs to be rebuilt, generally how much does it cost?

When it is in gear and you try to spin the wheels and there is no resistance that is normal. There is this thing inside there called a DIFFERENTIAL that allows the wheels to spin independantly and freely. It is what allows the car to make turns witout binding up the axles.

The clicking in reverse I am not sure what to make of. I Betcha bux it is normal though.

 

you're fine. It will turn in gear, but it shouldn';t just spin "freely". But it will spin fine. Your opposite wheel should spin opposite if it's an open dif tranny

 

I havent driven the car yet, whoever stole it took the cam gears so I have to put those on before I'll be able to drive it.. I guess I'll see monday when I start it up
