Default Auto trans rebuild

I have a '90 Accord with the PX4B auto trans. Finally have the trans out of the car and on the bench. Ready to tear it down. Bought the Level 10 rebuild kit.

Any things to look out for, tips, links to tips, faqs etc. The level10 kit includes gaskets, lots of o-rings, clutch discs and a bag of steel *****. Do I need anything else? I believe the trans failure is from the oil pump failing. What should I look out for here. Also this is a general question regarding the torque converter; how do I know its ok.....the thing is welded together.

Thanks for any info and tips....

buy the transmission cooler. it will save your automatic tranny from burning out and go bad.

level ten should sell this.
and buy a kit from them that will help solve your tranny from slipping. i think its like 300 bucks there. its worth it.

Look for lots of clutch material in the filter (replace it). You should have your torque converter flushed or replaced, if it's contaminated (as they usually are on those trannys), the junk in the converter will cause you problems after the rebuild. Make sure to set your clutch pack clearances, adjustment is accomplished with different thickness end plates. Flush the tranny cooler in the radiator too. The symptom that those tranny usually experience is a clogged filter, so the car does not move, and the tranny whines like crazy. After the car sits for a while, the tranny will work for a while, till the filter plugs up again.

Work very clean - don't use cloth or paper towel - use carb clean or brake clean to wash parts down - use lint free cloth or paper towels only!

You should really have auto trans shop do this for you - I hope you don't pan on taking the valve body's apart - if you never do this before - You opening up problem child for your self - You really have of work clean around A/T transmission - if not done so can lead to problems like shifting problems - like I said, if never done this before - have a A/T shop do it for you.

Take pictures to keep track of stuff, then take pictures.. after you do that take more pictures. This is the number one thing you can do if your trying to do anything to a transmission internaly by yourself. Once you open it up, your'll understand. There are so many gears, pings, and ball bearings your'll go nuts. Much more then you would ever expect. Good luck with this, but if you have the cash I would have a professional do it. This is one thing that I fear to tackle alone.

Thanks for the advice. I will post my pictures on the internet ... I'm going in! I have rebuilt many motors and manual transmission in the past but this will be my first auto rebuild. Gotta learn sometime
Also I already purchased the rebuild kit and it will be very difficult to find a trans rebuild shop that will use the kit I supply and still offer a warranty.
