Default Torn trailing arm bushings

I bought my 93' Civic HB with under 70k miles. When I was rotating the tires, I noticed the trailing arm bushings are both torn. Is this common? The car was owned by a middle aged man who was the original owner and does not appear to be abused, but it's a possibility. Why do trailing arm bushings normally tear??

There was a TSB about them tearing. Mine need to be replaced too. Get the prothane replacements and don't go to the dealer! The dealer will charge around 600 for it. The prothanes are about 100 + 100 for install if you have a shop do it and 75 for an alignment which you will need after it is done.
