Default The Great LMA Debate: GSR v. ITR

The Great LMA Debate: GSR v. ITR

Question: Is the GSR LMA different (functionally) than the ITR LMA?
Answer: NO. Just different part numbers.

I just got finished doing some testing on a spring tester.

Pressure: 56lbs ITR v. 54lbs GSR(slightly used but sold as new).
Lift Capacity: Exactly the same.
Pad Diameter: 7mm on both LMA nipples. (please do not quote this with hehehees like Beavis and Butthead would).
The only difference: Blue painted dot on ITR LMA.

Some pics of my testing:

ITR 7mm

GSR 7mm

My notes on testing and some spring testing I also did

Special Thanks to
B19Coupe for providing the LMA's
99Hybrid_Hatch for doing the initial test about 2 months ago to bring it to my attention.

So is there really a need to upgrade from GSR to ITR then?

Is the 2lb difference beacause the GSR's were older?

Nice test

So the 2 pounds is prob just because the gsr is used?
Either way there doesnt seem to be enough of a difference to make a difference.
Very good info, We need more members like you, thanks for the info.

when going with really big custom cams you still need to modify the LMA's

Do you think LMA's are a wear/tear item that should be replaced on a certain interval?

I've rebuilt a few h22 heads and it seems that every one has at least 1 or 2 LMA's that have lost their clip. When this happens I just replace the LMA. It isn't normally a wear item though.

I hope this debate will end once and for all. I want to thank rocket for
taking time to do the research. I've done the research myself. I changed my
LMAs today in my B16A head to GSR LMAs.

LMA GSR vs. B16A
Top is smaller for the B16A, narrow.

NOTE: the GSR pad is bigger than B16A

When they're installed... notice the difference?

Installing them....

So here. Let end the LMA debate. Rocket says GSR and ITR, same thing.
And I proved that the GSR and B16A are different. Thanks.

B16 and GSR LMA'sare the same

Tapered style is older b16 and b17 heads

Newer b16's LMA available from Honda would be the 99-00 Civic Si.

Thats my guess..

awesome post but i thought this was already covered, the questions are:

are ALL GSR LMA's the same ? I thought the older motors had the inferior LMA's just as the old gen B16's.

as for a wear item, i replaced the lma's in my b16a2 motor @ 50k, and they signif. less smooth than itr replacements were

Older engines use the LMA's with the smaller section top. The tit on the rocker arm will ride off the edge and bind the valvetrain, so don't use them with cams of more than .425" lift. You've seen the pictures, so just look at the LMA's you have....if they're the small ones, get the newer ones with the larger pads.

how about 92-96 obd1 prelude ones compared to 97-01 prelude ones... the 92-95 look like GSR ones, but the 97-01 prelude ones look coiled.. any info on those ?

Thanks for doing the test-a lot of guys can benefit from this kind of knowledge. I still like the LMA's with the blue dot though

Sorry to bring this up again but, what about the hype of using Prelude 2000 VTEC LMA's instead?

Well besides this thread https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=566420, can anyone else ellaborate a bit more. Im about to upgrade the valvetrain in my B16 with 'R' internals. And not too sure about the whole washer thing.

The only thing I can tell you for sure is that I measured a 1/4in stainless steel washer at my work and it was exactly .040" thick.

my question is the overall lift cabability

how about that little plunger in there

the type R is slightly different

as for the pads on the Lma's how about the contact area
