Ugggg axles making noise (I THINK)
well as some of you know i replaced my axles with kragen rebuilt after the boots ripped open a few months or about 5000 miles ago. Well just recently i started getting noise from the axles. Actually i really didn't notice it at all until a little while after i got my 15 in rotas w/ 205-50-15 Yoko es100's.
So here's the noise i THINK it's the axles but maybe it could be something else?
at slow speeds making turns in gear up hill, no noise at full lock only at a specific point there is noise like a slow quiet knocking noise it sounds like its coming from the drivers side axle (hard to tell really)...
So last night i lifted the car up on my jack stands and had a look at the axles and noticed that the drivers side looks a little further out than the passenger side... not by much, i mean the seal isn't leaking or anything...
what's the acceptable gap range for how far out the axles can be? what should i do about this?
thanks for any help.

tight as hell. however not to spec, my torque wrench took a dump on me
so they are all probably well beyond 80 ft/lbs but they are defintly not loose!

jack up the car and jiggle the tire back and forth

i should check the axle nuts... good idea....
when i jack up the car the wheels feel normal no play at all.
HOWEVER now that i think about when i turn the wheel left or right by hand it makes a knocking noise (quiet) that repeats faster if the wheel is turning faster or slower if the wheel is turning slower.... get it??
Hmmm....
more help please!

ever asked if it was the right axel or not ?, first of all the axel should be about half an inch from the rotor thats how much it should be sticking out make sure thats tighten, then for the lug nuts it should be 81psi with the torque wrench, if it still make clockn noise then u got a bad axel, double check that
About 2 yrs ago I got a set of 'lifetime warranted' axles for my '89 lude. 2 weeks later one of them took a crap on me and started knocking again. I didn't beat on it or anything and the lude was all stock except exhaust, so maybe it's just a bad new axle.
Just like the starter I put in my mom's 92 accord. First I bought the 'lifetime warranted' Beck-Arnley cause it was $80 cheaper than the honda. 2 DAYS later it took a crap. I could've gotten a replacement for free, but how many times do I feel like replacing the damn starter?? Needless to say, I got a refund and bought the Honda.

ohhh good idea... how do I do that?
yeah i'm almost 100% sure the axles where the right size i compared them to the old ones and they were with in 1/8 in.... or so...
i really don't want to replace my axles again!

The gap at the transmission should be next to nothing, maybe 1/8 or 1/10?
Also check if there is play where the axle plugs in to the tranny, there should be very, very little play there.
If there is then the bearing in the tranny is going and I could see that ****** up the axle and cause vibration.

there isn't really any vibration.... just that slight knock when turning hard but not in full lock at slow speed....

didn't make any sound before, i replaced them because one of the boots ripped and the rest looked like they were about to go....
it's been a from when i changed them.... they still look brand new. the noise occurring more often or maybe i just notice it more. the noise only started about 3 days ago. how long did your axle(s) last before they made noise?
I'm really wondering about the possibility of it just being a little "popped" out... the gap is definitely bigger on the drivers side than on the passenger's side. but not buy that much really. I'm thinking about trying to push it in some more but I'm wondering if I should really do all that work.... rather than to go get another axle...
the axles have lifetime warranty but i can't find the god damn warranty paper i think i left it in the box when i returned the old axles for my core refund!
anyways any ideas/suggestions are appreciated!

OK...I have the same problem. I jacked the car up today and tightened the **** out of the steering control arm knuckle....no problems now and I have less shimmy-ing on the highway. I havent heard that sound yet even though my brakes squeal like a piggie in heat when they get hot. You could hear that "clunking" sound before over the sound of the clunking. I just replaced the axle with a reman from autorice. It seems to be working ok so far.
Yes. If the trans is out of gear, no power is going to the axles. Therefore, no stress is on the joint (which is causing the noise).
Ain't it a b!tch when you have to replace the same part you just replaced?!?!
You need a

oh well.
how do i know for sure that it's the driver side axle... i mean that what it sounds like and the noise seems to be coming from there anyways....
I talked to a person who works a great Honda shop (Honda hospital) yesterday a the bank (where i work) and she said that about 1 in 10 reman. axles go to **** w/in 10,000 miles.
That means when you change your axles you have a 20% chance of getting at least one bad one! She said that they once had to change an axle 4 times (on the same car) in less than 2 months!
Don't they test these axles or do they just wrap them with new cv boots and ship'em out? *******!

The reason mostly is that it's cheaper on their end just to exchange the axle. Testing the axle would cost more then their willing to pay, more then nothing.
well you know what time it is get some
and the new axle and get to work
i know how u feel

So i got the axle out, i'm waiting for a ride to kragen from my girlfriend....
how do i know for sure that it's the drivers side only? that's what it sounds like but you never know right???
i just hope that after i get it all back together the noise is gone b/c if it isn't then i guess i have to change the passenger side axle.... yuck...
anyway i can test the axle now that it's out to see if it was the culprit?

Don't mean to hijack the thread here, but what's this bearing in the tranny you're talking about? I'm having weird noise problems in my Prelude right now and I have no clue as to what it could be. CV's are good, steering knuckles are good, wheel bearings seem ok, and when I spin the hub when the car's up in the air, it seems like the grinding noise is coming from the upper joint or inside the tranny. Can't really tell. Sorry about the OT post, but this is really starting to **** me off.
