Default Never use 20W50

I just broke my VTEC controller/switch last night as I acclerated past 7500rpm with my z6.

Two months ago, I started using 20/50 because my motor was buring oil at a rate of 3L per week on 5/30.

I went to my mechanic today and he wired up my ECU and then counted the beeps as I turned the ignition to position II. He then checked the honda bible...and it said Variable Valve Timing...my first thoughts were "F***"

I guess two months of my engine trying to engage VTEC with thick oil, broke it. In effect I now have a no VTEC, and my motor is still burning oil, because I just changed the oil back to 10/30. And I can't shift past 5000RPM or else I'll have to top up my oil everyday.

I'm swapping it out forsure now....when I do so, I'll post pics.

I should have known better......that's why the owners manual recommends only using 5/30 and 10/30.

20/50 my poor motor....i abused her.

Sounds like you should have just rebuilt the motor the first time, molassis for oil will slow burning, but not solve the problem.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

i dont see how a 20W50 will damage your vtec. must be some other reason.

if you burn oil don't use a thicker grade. just keep adding your 5w30 oil until you rebuild.

Did you ever figure out why it burned oil in the first place? I think that'd be a better starting point than switching to 20w50.

that sucks.

You know, rebuilding that block would probably not be all that expensive and a great learning experience.

Just would take like 2 weeks down time.

At that rate of consumption, I don't think the oil was the problem. Do a compression and leak down test. Pistons rings or valve seals are probably the culprit.
