Default Falken Azenis.. My driving impressions.

I just got some Falken Azenis mounted on some 14"x 5.5" rims for auto-x. Tire size is 195/60/14. For street I use Toyo T1-S 195/50/15 mounted on 15x6.5".

Turn in response:

The turn in response is a tad better on the T1-S, which can be attributed to the larger width of the rims, I am sure if the Azenis were mounted on wider rims, they would have excellent turn in response as well. However, the stiff sidewall on the Azenis compared to the T1-S, makes up for the great turn in response on the 14" rims.

Dry Handling:

Now I just got these tires mounted today, so I haven't had that many miles on them yet, however I can definetly say that the dry handling is superior to the T1-S, which is expected of course. The stiff sidewall on the Azenis make turns a lot easier and more predictable than the T1-S.

Auto-x.

I have only Auto-x with the T1-S, so I can't compare them to the Azenis, however I will be racing with the Azenis this weekend, so I'll post my reactions with them on the track.

Road Noise:

The Azenis have a hum at 40-50mph, and even more hum when you are going faster. The T1-S, do not have such a distinct hum, however the T1-S aren't exactly that quiet either.

Wet Handling:

I have yet to test the Azenis in the rain, however I do not expect them to be as good as the T1-s in the rain. The T1-S are excellent in the rain and provide almost the same amount of traction as in the dry.

Tire Wear:

The Azenis are already showing signs of wear, however that is not a concern, as I am using them for racing. For street use, they would be great, but wouldn't yield a high treadlife. The T1-S are all around a great tire and have barely any signs of wear about 8k miles of use.

Overall, from the others reviews I have read on h-t.com, they are all basically the same. In the future, I would like to get some 205/50/15 mounted on 15x6.5" and see how they feel. I know ITR owners dislike the turn in response and sloppiness on 15x6" rims. 15x7 with Azenis would yield great turn in response and excellent handling.

Those are my impressions, hope it gives others in the market insight.

my experience.

autox: they give you a lot of feedback - they squeal squeal squeal before they break away. im on 15x6.5" rims and turn-in is still a bit sloppy. can be sorta remedied with 40+psi up front

rain: wet roads it can handle fine, puddles of water not so great.

road noise: not so pronounced for the first half-life. after youve gotten the tread worn down a bit, they get pretty loud. ride is very bumpy, you can lower to ~32-35psi and it helps a bit in lessening the bumpiness

would buy again?: sure, prolly the best dry handling tire for the money.

I liked my Azenis. But I've had my ES100's for about 3 days now, and I like them even more. Smoother ride and quieter.

But I daily drive a lot so Azenis were more than I needed.

No, the sidewalls are too stiff for drag racing.

I forgot to mention that on the 14"/azenis it weight 34 pounds while the 15" heliums and T1-s only weighed 28lbs.

WHAT! No discussion about how Friggen heavy there are??? That in effect increases unsprung weight and quick turn in, as well as acceleration

I had a set of Azenis 205/50/15 mounted on 15*7 SSR Comps. They do have nice turn-in with the wide rim but the tire life is absolutely horrible. I live in the foothills and I didn't even come close to 10k miles with rotation. The grip is great but this all comes fro the fact that damn things are made a bubble gum. They are cheap tires and for a racing set would be great. I really wouldn't recoomend them for any sort of daily driving since the wear is so fast. Just another example of you get what you pay for. Also those things are like 4-5 lbs heavier each tire compared to others like the Yoko ES and so on. I would never run them again unless it was strictly for autocross since they only have a H-speed rating.

I painted my stock wheels last night (14" with Azenis) and realized as I was moving them around the shop just how heavy the Azenis are. They're a great tire for the price though.
