The rear of my CRX sits too high, and there's a bunch of dead coils, so I was thinking...
What would the negative effects be if I were to take off 1 or 2 of the dead coils (same amount would be taken off of both right and left rear)? These are the coils (obviously) that when the car is sitting on the ground, are fully resting against one another.
I know most ppl say "
to you, you big idiot" for cutting coils, but I can't really think of what would be affected if dead coils were removed, other than ride height and the fact that the springs might pop out of the top when the car is jacked up.

Do you like your drinks shakened?
The ride will be very bouncy to say the least. It will get annoying to you.A guy at work cut his and couldn't stand it.

What kind of springs were they? How much did he cut?
I'm talking about taking off maybe 1 or 2 dead coils to drop the rear of the car maybe another 1" at the most.
I'm not chopping the coils that actually determine the ride of the car - as far as I know, the dead coils have nothing to do with that. But that's why I'm asking.

It would be bouncy, and then you would think... maybe I could cut the bump stops. Which will blow your shocks eventually,so
to spring cutting. Just get you a cheap setup, KYB's and some type of coilover, Skunk2's or something. But you will regret the cutting when you do it. plus it will just look stupid.especially when your head bounces off the roof a couple times.

I guess I should mention - the springs I'm on currently are Neuspeed sports, which are paired up with Bilstein shocks.
Again, usually when referring to cutting springs, people are talking about OEM springs/shocks, and cutting 3 or 4 entire coils off of the springs. I'm talking about 1 or 2 dead coils.
THE MAIN QUESTION IS: DO DEAD COILS AFFECT THE RIDE? I don't honestly see how they can. If they are touching each other when the car is simply sitting still, I don't see what they do, other than keep the spring locked in the perch when the car is jacked up.
Doesn't seem like anyone is reading what I'm typing.

As far as I know (admittedly not very far) the dead coils really do not do any work, they just keep the shorter than stock spring from popping out of the perch in rebound situations. If you played around with your springs before you installed them you probably noticed the spring rate on the dead coils is very soft, so you MIGHT stiffen the rear some and make it a little more uncomfortable on the street (low speed low frequency bumps may be magnified), but I doubt there would be much detriment. You may want to consider what shock you have and if it can take much more lowering (and if it will be warranted at said drop). If you have Yellows you're good, AGX's may not be the best as they don't warrant much of a drop. My .02

Bilsteins...I've seen them at a lower drop, at a stiffer rate (skunk2 coilovers), and heard they were doing great.
Thanks for the reply.

clarifying helped, was not familiar with your car so I had no Idea you where rolling on anything other then stock suspenion. O well all I can say is give it a try since they are the 2 that rest in the perch and do it carefully make sure it is going to have good suport back down in the perch.
another thing- really pay attention to how much you are removing compared to the front springs.
good luck
