Lip mounted wheel weight on stock wheels. Can it be removed when new tires are put on?
I might be painting my LS Mesh and i was wondering, can i remove the lip mounted weight since i will be putting new tires on it, or would that mess things up?
Yes. You can ask for the stick-on weights that go behind the spokes on the rim. The techs may say that it will not be as accurate as the lip-mounted weights, but I have had no problem with the stick-on weights for over 50,000 miles. Besides, your rims will look better without the lip-mounted weights.
It's really a pain in the ***, but they will do it if they carry those weights. My shop doesn't so unfortunately we only do the lip mounted weights. Just take it to a shop and ask first and then if not go to a rim shop, they usually have some layin' around.
you can have your tires weighted on the inner side of the rim. i just had these done on my slipstreams. The balancing machine used will need to be properly configured.
Yea i knew about the stick-on weights that go on the inside, thats how my other rims are. I just didn't know if the stock wheels needed the lip weights for some reason.

I prefer good stick on weights on the inside of the wheel. Make sure they clean the wheel real well before sticking them on though, I used to work at Just Tires and absent mindedly forget to clean the wheel before sticking the weights. Lets just say alot of customers returned claiming there car vibrated at certain speeds

I know all out of balance wheels/tires need weights, i just didn't know if stock wheels need the lip mounted weights, rather than the stick-ons since you always see OEM wheels w/the lip weights.

At discount tire they can balance them with the clip-on weights only on the inner lip, they configure the machine a certian way, doesnt take any extra time either. It is called a static clip balance
