i wanna go see some road racing at my local track summit point WVA - i noticed there's a SCCA mid atlantic road racing event this weekend.
If anyone can tell me a lil about the cars/classes, what i'd expect to see there, that'd be really great.
id like to see some good touring/gt type classes.

when you get there, you should see if you can get on a crew team for the next race. you get in the gate free, and its a great opportunity to learn.

SCCA regional races have a whole hodgepodge of races. Everything from formula cars to GT cars.
The most popular classes are Spec Miata and Spec RX-7 - both are very limited modification classes, but the racing is fantastic.
Formula Vee, which is an old formula based on the original VW Beetle, is also popular.
Improved Touring is also extremely popular - you will get a mix of older cars and newer through these fields. Everything from old Volvos and Fiats to GSRs and BMWs. Good racing. There are 4 classes with IT - ITS is the fastest (GSRs, BMW 325s, Porsche 944, etc) ITA is next (CRX Si, old RX-7, SOHC 240SX) ITB is next with an assortment of VW Volvo and some japanese imports and ITC is the slowest and typically has older cars from the 70s and early 80s.
America Sedan is Mustangs vs Camarobirds.
There are other classes (Touring, Showroom Stock, and other Formulas) but they ususally don't have large fields at regionals.

yes and no. this is a amateur race, so the biggest classes tend to allow limited modifications. there are always a few cool, expensive, fast cars to see, but the good racing is in the slower/less expensive classes like SM, SRX-7 and IT. you will not see Speed Touring cars, but the racing will be just as exciting. For the $20 entry ($0 if you find a racer and join their crew), it's a fun afternoon or weekend. All the races are on Sunday - Saturday is qualifying and practice.

There will be some low class SLOW cars there, too.

Even if you go on Saturday, it's hard to tell practice and qualifying sessions from actual races, so what you see will be just as exciting (especially if you've never been to a road race before).
If you know somesone's that going to be there racing, call them and get to be a crew member. You will have to purchase a temporary SCCA membership but you will save on the entry fee.
Or you can be a specatator, and just have a great time watching. There's plenty of places to watch from and if you are so inclined, camp there also.

Go to http://www.improvedtouring.com and post a note that you would be willing to help a team out at the track. You are all but guaranteed to find someone willing to get you in the gate and probably buy you a burger to boot...

If you show up on Sunday morning you can get in for $15. You should check it out, I've been going to almost every race for about 10 years and It's still as exciting as the first time I went.
