This tool isn't necessary on most Honda engines - most of them have pin holes where you can stick a drill bit which holds the cams gears in place.
Does anyone have a good list of which engines have the pin holes & which don't? I'm pretty sure the H22 doesn't have the pin holes (and this tool comes in handy), but other than that I don't know.

I use the Lisle one and it definitly holds the gears solid. Is it necessary? No. But it does make life easier. I prefer to have the gears free when fitting the timing belt, but the belt will clear with it on.
Also, the Lisle one is universal so it takes some adjustment. The one Larry is using above is engine specific. I don't recall off hand who makes them, but they're available online somewhere.
