Default suggestions on how to lessen the amount of oil loss

i burn over a quart per 1k miles, my car puts out some white smoke at high RPM's and my bumper is always full of oil resedue. The car has about 110k miles on it, it runs strong (other than this). anything i can try to do to fix it without replacing the rings? thanks

what oil brand and weight are you using? try 20w-50 during the warmer seasons if you aren't already. In some cars Mobil 1 seems to get misplaced a lot more than other oils as well.

how about you stay out of vtec for a while....your oil consumption will be considerably lower. when you go into vtec you are burning oil alot quicker right? or is it just being at the high rpms?

imho, i think its how they are beat on off the ships (imported in) which counts.

some itr's get less abusive crew men to drive it off, some get the idiots who redline the thing ... which of course, they arent supposed to do but do anyway.

A few things it could be: rings, valve seals or pcv blow-by. Are you puffing smoke under throttle (rings) or off throttle (seals)? Is there oil in your pcv line at the manifold (blow-by)? A compression test will help narrow down the problem.

I just switched from Mobil 1 Tri-Syn 5w30 to 15w50, and it makes a BIG difference... I have seen no oil consumption so far, and not too mention that the car seems to idle and rev a bit smoother. Just gotta figure out what I'm gonna do in the winter...

Funny, he never mentioned it was a Type-R BUT, he did list that it has roughly 110,000 miles on the Odo...

I'd be more inclined to look at these things first. The oil weight issue is a possibility but, only after making sure the car is running correctly in the first place with such high mileage and unknown or questionable, wear, repair, modding and maintanence.

Anton: I agree but it seems like he wanted to get it fixed without any major work/expense.. that's why changing oil was suggested

Yeah I hear ya

And not neccessarily aiming this at you, I just think a few too many people here recommend different oils and weights in hopes to remedy any or many oil consumption issues which in this origional posters situation may not be the cure.

I'm one of the guys that DID solve the consumption dilemma with a weight/type/brand switch but, my car is relatively new in comparision and has zero mechanical issues (knock on my head which is a block of wood!)

I have 2 quarts of 10w30 and 2 quarts of 15w40 in right now. No burnoff at all, I can't remember the last time that ever happened.

I tried that concoction at the track, with little luck. Next time I go to the track I'm putting only 15w40 in, we'll see what happens. I burn about a quart/1.5 quarts for one full track day, and usually .5-1 quart per 4000-5000 street miles.

As for the fall and winter.... 5w30.

since we're making suggestions like this, i'll suggest that by not driving the car you will burn less oil..
but seriously I used to burn a bit of oil using mobil1, hurt the wallet and I didn't see much difference going to that oil.. now i'm using valvoline maxlife, designed for the higher mileage cars and cheaper

thanks for the replys, I used Mibil 1 5-30 unitill about 5k miles ago when i moved up to 10-30 to see if if it would make a difference, but it doesnt seemed to have slowed it down. I'm not in vtec too often since i use the car for work and i'm on the highway most of the time, but without a doubt when it burns most is in vtec, and thats the only time that it smokes, cause i can see it in my rearview.

when you have to get thicker oil to reduce your oil consumption chances are you have rings that need replaced.. or oil leaking past valve seals....

1 quart / 1000 miles??

oil all over bumper??

vtec has nothing to do with that amount of oil consumption.. so vtec fools need to get a clue

get your car looked at...compression and leakdown test...

thicker oil is NOT the solution.... it might be a temp. fix... but then again, perhaps a fire in your exhaust and subsequent chared remains of a car you love so much will clue you guys in....

have it looked at.....

Damn Mr. Lenk!

I'm burning oil too! With only 10k miles on a new itr longblock from acura..... And I've been using mobil 1 5/30 syn for 10k miles..... The previous owner used pep boys oil..... Not to mention the first itr motor in this itr was blown due to not putting oil in. I can only imagine the break-in they did!

Funny thing is, I burned 1/2 qt at a track day and 1 qt of street driving in vtec..... Weird, I tell ya! (I smell burning oil from the engine compartment when I get into vtec for some reason... and i can't find where it's coming from.....)

If I don't get into vtec, I don't burn a freaking drop but if I flog it a little while going back and forth to work it can burn a qt within 500-1k miles.....

Compression test and leakdown test will confirm this wednesday. Wish me luck!

I'm struggling a little with this oil thing too. I'm currently using Mobil 1 10/30. My car has very good compression #s, never leaks or smokes, has 60k on the odo and burns maybe 1/2 qt every 4,000 on the street. On track however, I burn nearly 1/2 qt every 30 min session! I understand that some oil burning at hi-revs is normal, but this is getting worrysome. Contrary to what was posted earlier, I believe this is very VTEC related because our cars go rich in VTEC. That extra fuel in the cylinder breaks up the oil and burns it easier. Before I try 15/50, I'm gonna try a VAFC to lean things out a bit in VTEC. A friend who did this saw his on track mileage go from 9.5 mpg to 11mpg. Less black bumper, less fuel used, more power and hopefully less oil consumption.

Many, many ITR drivers will simply not use Mobile One because of oil consumption issues.

I refuse to use synthetics at all; however, someone more experienced with synthetics might be able to recommend a different brand and/or viscosity in an attempt to help with the problem. I know some ITR folks who've used Castro Syntec and do not use oil, even though they were using Mobile One at an accelerated rate.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Well, in that case, I can tell everyone once again that Mobil1 blew through my motor with reckless abandon. Up to 2 quarts in 3000 miles at times.

I switched to Castrol Syntec 5w30 and the issue lessoned to 1/2 a quart for similar mileage and use.

On a whim and just because it was laying around (geez where does this kinda thing happen?) I tried Agip 10w60 and VOILA! Absolutely NO consumption whatsoever. I changed to it right before Limerock last fall, drove it to the track, ran it, drove it home, checked it multiple times before and after and noticed NO consumption. I drove 3 to 4 autocrosses afterwards and still No consumption.

I change it every 3K miles or less, depending on frequency of autocrosses and HPDE's, which this season has been infrequent unfortunately.

I changed it before the expo, ran an autocross, drove to the expo 400 miles, drove both days, drove back 400 miles, drove another autocross, checked the level many times before and after, inbetween and still No consumption.

The only time I noticed the level lower a bit was when the dipstick tube came loose. I fixed that and again, No loss.

IMHO, Mobil1 sucks in more ways than one and for the inflated price, I think it's a waste as well.

Good luck to all.

If your car is smoking that badly, I don't think changing the weight/composition of your oil is the solution. Your engine has mechanical issues that need to be dealt with. Do a compression and leakdown test. If you have an experienced mechanic, you can have the valveguide seals replaced without removing the head, and see if that makes a dent in your oil consumption problem. If that does not take care of it, you need to bite the bullet and have the bottom end done. I know that is not what you want to hear, but it is the harsh reality that you may be facing.

i resently installed oil catch can. not saying that it would be 100% of it, but did anyone consider that a good chunk of burned oil goes through your intake manifold

See my comment about pcv blow-by and oil in the manifold. Before my catch-can, I lost 1 quart every 20 minutes on the track. With the catch can installed, I now lose between zero and 1/4 quart between 20 minute sessions. Big difference for me.

So i spoke to a mechanic and will do a compression and leakdown test to start with I guess i will go from there, I'm just curious how even though there is such a bad rep about Mobil 1, so many of us still use it. I stuck to it because thats the the previous owner had used since new, but i'm starting to think i should change.

funny, this is the integra TYPE-R forum, and even at 110k the car should not be losing that much oil imo

No, Tom is just a knucklehead who trys to have the last word.

Most people will assume that you will be asking Integra Type R specific questions and he inferred that many Type-R's are ragged on at the docks while being recieved. His post was not really applicable, Not you asking about oil consumption in general.

There have however been many reports of oil consumption with Type-R's, many stock and new or relatively new (Me included). It is best to list what car you are speaking of and it's current condition and mileage and any major problems you may have so you can get the best help/advice. It's not elitest, just best to be clear to get the best help.

Do Not feel like you don't belong or shouldn't ask questions here, Everyone is here to learn and share knowledge. Some people just miss the point sometimes.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I think Ive got an oil consumption issue as well. My bumper is black after a half tank of gas. And numerous times I have went to check the oil and there hasnt been any on the dipstick and I had to add atleast a quart. Kinda scary actually, and since the motor is pretty new, Im not used to it yet and have to check it more often now than ever before. I havent noted how much Im burning yet since I havent been able to get on a regular schedule with maintenance, but Im pretty sure its high.

One question I have though is how do I know if its oil on my bumper, or just fuel/carbon residue?? I am running very rich, but doesnt smoke in VTAK unless I downshift, I get a nice puff of blackness but then it goes away as I accelerate. My compression numbers seem to be very healthy, Im guessing a leak down might be next.

BTW, I am using Mobil 1 10/30 Tri syn. and I think Ill be switching to something else just to see if it changes anything, but I wont allow that to convince me there isnt a problem.
